Just got an 8830 and my ears really hurt...Please help

I switched from a different phone to my first blackberry this week (8830 world on Verizon). On all my phones I've kept the volume all the way down (I have sensitive ears) and I do the same on the 8830. Trouble is, my ears are just killing me even when I don't talk for very long (2 minutes). I can't believe it's just volume alone - is the sound quality on the 8830 a bit iffy or has anyone else had similar problems?

Should I buy a headset to use? I talk to my girlfriend for about an hour a day in the evening at home (otherwise don't use the cell much) so I can get whatever ridiculous looking set will be best for me.
