I lost my last BBM contact when He off'ed his Z10 and bought a J7.

Loaded FB messenger APK so I could stay in contact with him. Hopefully it won't be a huge battery drain.

Probably the said contact simply doesn't want to use it.

Tony, my guess as well. He's big into FB and who knows how many BBM contacts he has left.

BBM is cross-platform. I fail to see the issue. It's as easy to download as Messenger or any other messenger app. I have more now than years past. I just tell people to go to the Google Playstore or Apple store. Facebook forcing people to download messenger is pure and utter BS! (just my opinion)

The issue is his choice to not use BBM. I cannot force him to do that nor would I.

Forcing people to download and use BBM is likewise BS.
    IMHO.

Not sure it's forcing in this case. The user clearly used it on his Z10 prior to getting a new phone. Can't imagine he was being forced to then? But who knows I guess.

Actually it's worked out rather well so far. My wife needed a few photos I took in order so she could upload them onto Facebook. Checked the boxes and away they went.

Z30, so versatile of a device.

Then, I will say it...Just giving you a tough time.

However, in all seriousness, I do force people in so much that if they want to "chat" with me, then I ONLY use BBM. Otherwise, pickup the phone, or email. For the record, I am not a big chatter, and in this age of instant emailing, I find email, just slightly slower.

This argument is just knee-jerk criticism for people actively seeking something to complain about. In a nutshell, it's just good design choice. People that don't use FB messenger get a leaner FB app. As well, people (like me) have FB messenger installed because we have contacts that prefer to use that medium, but don't need to install the FB app itself. I uninstalled that resource hogging app from my device a year ago and have no need for the main app, so I get to use FB Messenger without having to deal with the pitfalls of the main app.

There's no "forcing" going on. If you use it, you will install it. If you don't, then you won't.

If anything, keeping Messenger embedded in the main FB app forces FB users who don't use FB Messenger to utilize resources they'd normally not use.

Modular deployment is almost always the best design decision. And more services would do well to follow this example.
