And for Canadians, it’s just plain patriotic to own a BlackBerry. The device was invented in Canada, was the world’s first leading smart phone with email capabilities, and could be again. Embarrassingly, the Prime Minister of Canada does not use a BlackBerry, nor any smart phone for that matter, sending yet another wrong message and missing an opportunity to promote a homegrown Canadian technology.
Hmm... BlackBerry says otherwise... and even note Harper on their Inside BlackBerry blogs as a user.

Obama is far from the only world leader choosing us. As we’ve noted on this blog, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt are among the world leaders who are known to use BlackBerry devices. Merkel uses a BlackBerry Q10 specially-augmented with voice encryption technology from our recent acquisition, SecuSmart.
I've seen Harper called out several times on this so it makes me wonder which is right.

Also, West's outlook wasn't so rosy in 2013.. but opinions change.

After the most flamboyant display of apathy-born-of-arrogance on the parts of founders Mike Lazaridus and James Balsilie saw the former world leader in smart phones tumble to world goat of smartphones, the company is rapidly descending into scrapyard price range. A ham-fisted buyout feint by Prem Watsa’s Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. (TSE:FFH) to staunch the haemorrhaging of BlackBerry’s share price has now been withdrawn even as other bids – including one put together by Mike Lazaridis with Cerberus Capital Management L.P. evaporate, the CEO is kicked curb side and replaced with another, and the share price peeks over the edge into the abyss. Another spectacular Canadian technology firm destroyed y complacency and arrogance. (Remember Nortel?)
