The vast majority of newspapers, if not all of them, have written, strict guidelines about their reporter receiving gifts, dinners and perks from companies. ESPECIALLY a newspaper that tries to toot its ethical horn like the NYT.
The actual policy might differ from newspaper to newspaper. In some cases the reporters aren't allowed to accept neither presents nor dinners. In other cases they are allowed, but have to be disclosed, and can't surpass a certain limit like for example 50 dollars.
Fact of the matter is, that sure Apple tries to use access to products, interview and scoops to sway coverage towards a positive direction. Just like EVERYBODY ELSE in the industry.
But they don't, and can't BUY their way to positive coverage in the mainstream media. Any such attempts would immediately backfire, and be seen as clumsy and corrupt.
Apples position as a giant in its field also makes it more vulnerable, since they're constantly being scrutinized, and the media loves a good controversy.
