Since BlackBerry should downsize it's hardware division, should it take a page from apple and just offer more colors?
Does it actually cost that much more money to make different colors?

"I got the yellow passport."
And you can theoretically say you're talking about 3 different phones.
I say no,that's sort've the cult following Apple has....
They have a large consumer base particularly
young ladies/teens that buy their phones because they
look cute or because they want a particular color.
That strategy was finally countered by Samsung
eventually offering the Galaxy S6 Gold. People buy BB's
for every reason other than it's color,that's they way it
should be.
Can't say that anymore... there's already 4 passports by the op's count. Lol red, black, white and now silver passport

Actually 5 Black/Gold was the first release.
Point is the BBP never released all the colors
at the same time.In fact ever color has pretty much caught
all the consumers by surprise,nobody knew about the Silver Release
until Chen was spotted and less than a week later the phone
is available for purchase. Not to mention of the 5 BBP's only 2(black/white)
are regularly stocked the other 3 are limited editions unlike your iphones.
I get ur point. But I only count the black/gold as a limited edition. Neither the red nor silver has any stated "limit".

Nobody considers the three iPhone color variants separate phone offerings, and they are all released at the same time. I think the color offerings from BlackBerry and minor chassis changes are frustrating many more BlackBerry fans than they are satisfying. Release all you color options at launch, and be done with the device and move on to the next. If BlackBerry were a little more candid with the device sales by model and color in their quarterly reports, then we would have an idea how the current strategy is working. Based on the total sales numbers, the product portfolio is being soundly rejected by the general public and the base too.

Buying a Red Q5,
and the reason was... wait for it... the color!

It's too bad that they didn't make that phone cheap enough at launch. Would be interesting to see if they could release it now 16GB and 2GB of RAM for $150.

BlackBerry has basically closed it's hardware division.... actually wonder if the new Silver Passport isn't just part of moving all responsibility to one of the Taiwanese partners. And they have consolidated the manufacturing for both shop.blackberry.com and for AT&T. If you wanted Black or Red... you might want to get one now. (just speculation on my part - when people start receive their new silvers we should be able to see if they are from Mexico or not.)
