I often see a lot of posts about how this company or that company no longer innovate. What the real thing is that all these companies still innovate new stuff into their OS regularly. The real issue is that people, in general, have taken a narrow view of what innovation is.

The narrow minded view is that to innovate is to try something new.

While this is a valid definition of the word innovate, it isn't the only one. People like new and never before things. This type of innovate captivates an audience because it takes something they haven't seen before and makes them start thinking of the possibilities of these new applications.

Let's take Apple and use the most obvious example. A touch screen phone. Now touch screen technology wasn't new even then. But it was large and bulky. The idea of a phone having multi touch was unheard of. This is what spawned so much awe in the phone. Being able to do something you have never been able to do before.

Android has widgets which wasn't something seen on phones before. Being able to customize a screen to see the information want was new to the mobile seen. Though many people saw this as a gimik, it was truly new to the space.

This is a BlackBerry site, so I won't go into a lot of details about BlackBerry innovation but track pass and bridge are a couple of note in recent years.

Point being is that innovation of something is new is exciting.

Now for the less exciting and grossly over looked definition of innovate.

To introduce a new way of doing something.

This is often dismissed as company A copying company B. The simple truth is that isn't the case. Companies take ideas from other companies and innovate news ways to do the same thing or improve on how it is done for their application.

This is simple evolution of products and we should commending companies for doing it instead condemning them for it.

Straight copy and paste of features should come with public angst as there is an obvious lack of innovation being taken place. Instead a company's way of getting something to their platform as quickly as possible. Sometimes this is necessary as the feature is of such high demand or there isn't a better way of doing it. (think rubberbanding at the end of a scroll)

One things in recent history point to BlackBerry doing the same thing. Gestures is something new and exciting. But other things like the hub and active frames aren't anything new. The innovation of the hub and active frames is taking an old idea and improving them in new ways.

I think the talk needs to move away who is and isn't innovating new, never before seen things. It should be looking at what a company is putting forth and debating the merit of those innovations.

So before putting down Apple for their gestures as a copy of BlackBerry, think about what about the innovation is good or bad. Whether it is bad implementation or not enough differentiation or any other factor.

This goes for any company and not just Apple or BlackBerry.

I agree with what you said. Consumers always have bigger expectations and always want to be wowed but miss all those little things that are added every update
