for us in Indonesia, it isn't sounds strange for us. cause in here, BlackBerry is Majority for teens. even under 11-yo kids got the gemini or the elder curve or any BBRY for cheap prizes . so if i see the same news like you share, i don't feel surprise about it.

Something doesn't add up here..19,000 sold in less than a week but only 100,000 in 6 months?!

It will be interesting to see the sales figures when the numbers are released on March 28th. My feeling is that Z10 sales will be a lot higher than 100,000 as well.

You really think demand for a product is as high over its entire lifetime as in the first week of availability?

No, he is saying that 19,000 in week 1 then only an average of 7,000 per week after that is weird.

If that were the case, you'd hear Apple announcing that they sold 150 million iPhones in a single quarter. ;-)

They're modelling a demand curve based upon launch and trending run rates over time.

It's the same thing as Apple selling five million iPhone 5s over the launch weekend, but then 47.8 million iPhones (including iPhone 5, 4, and 4S) for the first full (90 day) quarter on market. If it sustained its launch rate, they'd have moved 150 million iPhone 5s over 9 days and then however many million iPhone 4 and 4S's on top of that.

Supply constraints now...hard to find any z10 in jakarta..most of big retailers are out of stock. banks and carriers took a lot of z10 for promotional packages ( credit card bundled with phones, etc etc).
So yes sales will get better over time as existing 9900 and 9810 users upgrade to z10. There are trade in programs as well.

Yeah I'm not saying the run rate won't decline. I'm saying selling only 80k in 6 months after 19k in a few days sounds like way too steep of a decline. Anyone from Indonesia have some insight on demand there?

hmmm as far as i know, in indonesia, cause i'm indonesian here, every new BBRY model, every model, like this Z10 always rise any new customer enormously. and yes, why ? the reason from most of them is "for prestigious". i don't know if now the smartphone is one thing to show-off to the other people meanwhile they aren't know how to use BB like us here. and, they said they will hunt for some new feature, but only few of them who said that they also find the newest feature. the point is, they hunt BB to get prestige from the people. i'm honestly want to get Samsung Android S3. but my family refuse it and suggest me to choose this montana

Since the 19,000 seems to include preorders, it probably isn't crazy to assume that the sales rate in the first week might be 4-5x that of the long term rate. However, there are some other serious issues with the unit calculations.

The 19,000 unit sales number was for the retailer Erajaya, which has around a 25% market share of the handset market in Indonesia. Therefore, total Indonesian sales would need to be projected out to 70,000 to 80,000 units for the first week (or less).

Since it would definitely not make sense to sell 70,000 units in the first week, and 30,000 units total in the following 25 weeks, I think that the projections for 100,000 units over six months should have been related to Erajaya only.

Therefore, total Indonesian sales should be expected to reach at least 400,000 units over the next six months. To further back up this interpretation, Indosat (21% market share) was aiming to sell 100,000 iPhone 5 units over six months, implying total Indonesian sales of close to 500,000 units over six months. Initial Google search volumes for the Z10 in Indonesia have been a bit higher than the iPhone 5 when it launched in Indonesia, so we should expect Z10 sales to be similar or higher to the iPhone 5 there.

Is that why there are loads of Z10 listings on Gumtree UK with folks selling off their Z10s for as much as 100 - 120 pounds off the purchase price ?

For what it's worth, sales of my BB10 app(s) to Indonesian customers already match the numbers for the UK to date. In case you've forgotten it launched in the UK on January 31 so we're coming up on two months soon.

In the last five days, which seems to be roughly the period since the official launch in Indonesia (if I have my data right), sales have been at 3-4x the UK numbers. Clearly there's real action there!

I am Indonesian too, and this is my first post here after lurking for more than a year

I believe Blackberry's growth in our country will continue with the release of BB10 handsets. Many owners of the previous BB OS would have these reasons to upgrade:

    • Modern touchscreen OS that is as stable, fast, and friendly UI as the other competitors' OS. No more battery pull every day(s).
    • Cheaper data subscription. I take Telkomsel as the largest operator in the country for example. For the pre-paid card (more popular than post-paid), the cost for one month BIS full service is 90.000 rupiah (US $9). Now as BIS is not required, people can buy one month internet data subscription as low as $2.5 (600 MB, 150 MB everywhere + 450 MB bonus while in 3G coverage area only), $5 (600 MB + 600 MB bonus), $6 (1 GB + 1 GB bonus), and up to the $40 package. As the 3G coverage area is very good, for most people I think the $5 or $6 package should be enough, and that is a substantial saving.
    • Blackberry ecosystem, the BBM that is. People talk a lot of IOS and Android ecosystem, but many do not realize that Blackberry has one that is irreplaceable too. Unless you live here where BBM users are everywhere, you might not be able to image it. I'm not a fan of BB, never have one. My current handset is Nokia wp8, and I have used Samsung's android for many years. But my wife and two kids are BB biggest fan. Recently I bought an iphone 5 for my daughter (8th grader) to replace her BB apollo. She thought she is done with her blackberry. "Slow, terrible battery, no apps", and so she begged me for iphone. What happen after she has got her iphone? She can't stop using her bb because 80% to 90% of her friends are blackberry users! Whatsapp or Line are not yet in the same league as BBM just yet. Same situation with my son (12th grader), and even more so with my wife as she is using her Z10 intensively for online business.
