This morning, after reading a lot about the Globe and Mail report about BlackBerry Bringing back the legacy OS buttons to win back former BlackBerry fans - BlackBerry to bring back function keys to win back former fans - The Globe and Mail I decided to throw together a quick render - imagining what a BlackBerry 10 with these physical buttons COULD look like. Obviously this is just a Q10 with a navigation area crammed in.
The render was put together quickly before work, so sorry for the graphic errors. This is the FIRST BlackBerry Q20 concept image. Posted February 24th.
And yes, this device is pretty UGLY - but it gets you thinking!

IS BlackBerry taking a step backward? Or is this good news?

I love the new Callbuttons option. But they have to modify the BB10 a little bit to put more of the BBOS options and shortcuts into the BB10 Ver. with Trackpad and Call buttons
Hey hows it going? i think they need to smash the Q10 and 9930 together. i LOVED my 9930 Bold, but like the updated apps the Q10 offers. Even if we have to side-load the apps and fake it til we make it. One day Blackberry will be a competitive droid. As far as concepts go, i wouldn't go to crazy with contemporary or minimalism. Lets just combine the 2 best models (in my opinion). Lets bring back the function buttons, but possibly instead of being a physical option, lets have the option. We all like options. So lets digitally bring it back, as a collapsible digital option. I miss the ability to press the menu button to wake my phone up from being idle. I hate pushing the top button to wake the Q10 up. So when the phone is idle, there is a visible BB symbol in the screen that when you press, the phone wakes up. Also the size of the blackberry has plenty of room to broaden itself due to phones like the galaxy being the size of a tablet etc. We could easily have a keyboard AND a nice 5in touch screen. another idea is to make the BB symbol the actual hearing piece at the top! so conceptually it is still there, but in a updated way.

Instead of the regular bold keys could you try the Porcshe Design buttons? Wouldn't that suit the device better?
I agree with a user-selectable virtual toolbelt. And... how does the trackpad work? Didn't people ridicule BBOS for having a mouse pointer on touchscreen devices (amongst a million other quirks)??
Niiiiiiice! I would buy that with the navigation buttons.
What would also be awesome is if when selecting and editing text the regular buttons disappear and show only a navigation bar eg, formatting icons and a track pad like selection area. Same for the camera, put all the controls and options on the bottom bar.!
Fantastic render though. One thing that I notice about all of the rendered images created by everyone is that they always make the screen unrealistic large with a slim bezel! This isn't likely to happen, not If you see the Z3 bezel size. Why not stick to reality!
Are those not physical buttons? A lot of button people will not like virtual buttons that give no feedback, cent if they vibrate I think they still want their real buttons.
originally they are not physical, they are digital. But if it was possible for the screen to be that big, i dont mind them being actual physical buttons. I could do with or without.
This is great!! I like the larger screen, just some refining tips:
- The "tool belt" needs to be physical keys, they look like software buttons
- The BlackBerry word and logo up top could be removed and have more space for screen real estate
The idea of putting the Bold 9930 and Q10 is really awesome. A 3.5 or 3.9 screen is good enough. And don't forget to add the nice silver aluminum wrap around the 9900. It's really slick and neat. Thanks for sharing
