I just got my 8703e it has OS 4.1 on it, I'm downloading 4.3 desktop software from RIM but it's SO slow like 50k/s for some reason so going to take over an hour. If anyone gets this in time, if I add all my contacts to the phone, will they get erased when I upgrade the OS? Don't want to waste my time!
If you are upgrading the Desktop Manager, that won't do anything to your phone. If you are upgrading the device software, that will kill all the data on your phone. You can do a back up and restore though to prevent losing data.
The file is huge and BlackBerrys download site is very busy.
After you have the Desktop Manger installed, you need to locate either your original software or a model specific update.
No worries about your data. The OS upgrade starts with a device backup and finishes with a restore. The new OS will start up just like the old one.
An OS upgrade automatically backs up and restores ALL your data, settings, etc., and most of your third-party applications.
It is wise to do a separate backup, as well as sync to Outlook or whatever.
Ditto. I always do a backup before any update just in case.
I updated my software and lost a lot of files - was only able to restore the address book. :(
They usually restore and back up automatically, but I would do it before justin case.
Pity, this good advice only resurfaces after the fact.

Problem - you need a computer to backup :eek:. Having been a programmer back in the good ol' days, I never fully trust them (ibm360). I would still prefer a bank passbook with all my deposits and withdrawals in one little book then strewn across umpteen slips of paper and stored in electrons in outspace!!!
