On my blackberry home when i turn it on ive always had a symbol that looked somewhat liked this. o_o until now it was just like that but now there is a 1 next to this and it looks like 1 o_o

Voicemail. Press and hold the 1 key to call your voicemail and clear it.

That would be a voicemail. Call your number or hold 1 to clear it. May need to go through VM setup first.

the manual that came with my phone shows a different icon for voicemail


Most of the previous phones I've had use the o_o icon for voicemail so I knew what it was, but if someone actually read the manual, it wouldn't be all that helpful

The voicemail indicator usually looks like an old-fashioned tape recorder.
