I want to tether a blackberry for Verizon to my laptop. How and which blackberry?
- Currently, I am not a blackberry user, but am a Verizon customer. I want to buy a Blackberry on Ebay (so I can go without a contract) and then get an unlimited data plan, to use it as my primary (or only) internet source. Currently, I live in a rural area where I can get dial-up, Verizon moblie broadband (which I am using), or a satellite provider. Mobile broadband is nice, but expensive, and if I can combine plans it would give me the benefit of having access on my phone & laptop for just a little more.
I currently run XP Professional, but might be using a Vista platform before too long. I like the looks of the Storm, but am willing to take advice on a cheaper alternative that would allow me to do what I want to do: browse the web/write emails on either my phone or my laptop on Windows XP Pro. My computer does not have a built in bluetooth connection, but does have wifi.
Can anyone help me? Suggest possible phones or directions on how I can do this? Thanks, I'm so not a tech guy and the guys at the Verizon store told me it was called tethering (like with a wink & a nod, telling me to go google) but couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me how.04-03-09 06:54 AMLike 0 - Curve may be the best value for you. Also look at a program called Tetherberry for tethering.
TetherBerry | The Web Anywhere04-03-09 06:58 AMLike 0 - Yes I saw that when browsing somewhere else. I would like to do it myself if there is a good DIY manual or link somewhere, I don't really want to spend the $40. I'm not so much a tech guy as in gadgets like blackberries, cameras, ipods, stereos.. but I can change settings myself if I have a good resource. I've set up home networks, just never anything with a phone.04-03-09 07:02 AMLike 0
- tethering on vz without paying for the additional service is explicitly against the TOS for usage..
suggest you either dont use it or dont be a cheap skate.. tetherberry is nothing more than an inducement to commit a crime.
Before you go that route..no point in believing me..check out the thread where the kid tethers and his dad gets a $3900 bill
if you want data only for your laptop get the aircard instead04-03-09 07:14 AMLike 0 - The Storm may be the better alternative for you as it uses EVDO rev A which is much faster than EVDO Rev 0 which the Curve has.
While there was a time when you could cheat Verizon on tethering (guilty), they are MUCH more savy at catching people and as another poster pointed out a kid was recently hit with a 4K bill for using tetherberry.04-03-09 07:45 AMLike 0 - Okay, so I can do it but have to pay the $15 fee a month? I could swing that to avoid legal matters.. I thought they were just trying to trick stupid people into paying for something they could do themselves.. like these "dial-up accelorators"?? Paying companies to increase your cache allocations.. blah..
If I agree to the fee, will they help??? Is this only Business services, b/c the guys at my Store said Verizon does not "support" that option.. then the wink and the nod about tethering.04-03-09 07:51 AMLike 0
