OK so somehow I locked myself out of my phone. The password lock was on and for some reason the password wasn't accepted. Ten attempts later I'm locked out..........now here's the bit that gets me. the phone deletes most of my information and eventually resets itself and becomes usable. I always thought if my phone was stolen a password on it would render it un usable......not happy.....

A phone call to your carrier renders it unusable. BlackBerry just makes sure your data is safe. BlackBerry Protect allows you to ascertain where it is and thus determine whether it is stolen or simply lost. Either way, you are in control of your data.

You'd be even more pissed off if you had to buy a new phone.

In the past didn't you have to phone your phone company and get a put code or something?......besides all it cleared was my contact book...

I think you are confusing your issue with SIM unblocking via a PUK code. Totally separate deal.

If you had set a PIN for your SIM and then entered it incorrectly a certain number of times it (the SIM) would be locked. There you would need the carrier to help.

Actually with IOS7 or whatever they are on now, the security feature requires you to put in your Apple ID and until that is successfully entered or the user erases it, the phone is unusable….

this happened to me with my Playbook.. it just decided to randomly choke on what should have been the real password. And it erased everything... Now I don't bother accumulating anything important on it, in case it decides to be unruly again...

Actually, you can use any stolen iPhone without signing into your Apple ID. All you need is iTunes and WiFi and a blank micro SIM. (Bypass activation, but the data will be lost and FindMyPhone will have time to activate )

BlackBerry has a scorched earth policy when it comes to too many failed logins. Always has I think.
