I upgraded to the latest 9700 OS (.862) and since then I have been having trouble with my lock key (upper left) which works to put the phone into standby mode, but doesn't work to take it back out.

I was hoping a full wipe and then a clean install of the OS would correct the problem.

Can anyone walk me through the process?

Correct. To be honest, I've only wiped once or twice in dozens of upgrades, and downgrades and haven't noticed a difference.

It's asking me whether I want ot delete all application data or delete all currently installed applications (or both)?

After the OS re installs to I need to restore the back-up file to my phone, or will the re-installed OS already put back everything that was there before/

Are you using DM to upgrade? Everything should reinstall.

I did the re-install through app loader, which is how I always install the new OS's. I hope that doesn't screw things up...

It won't and many like to use apploader. One should make a back-up file, like you did, and make a 3rd party app back-up. I like Crucial's method and make a 3rd party backup file every month or so to be safe. That said, I'm a little old school and lazy so I use DM 4.6 to upgrade my OS's. It does a nice wipe and load - and saves and reinstalls apps, data and settings. Never had a problem with it over years and multiple loads.
