how do you know when you're using wifi and not 3g? I tried turning the network off to see if the lit up wifi icon worked. It did not. With the 3g network on, I get a working browser again. However, I still dont know for sure if its using wifi or 3g since they are both lit up.

    Very confused!

When I turn the VZW connection off, my WiFi stays on, and can send/receive data great.

will try that. Last I tried it with connections off, nothing worked at all even though the wifi icon was lit up

Look in the upper right hand corner of the browser. It will show WiFi or your network signal. Whatever it shows is how it's connected.

If I leave both Verizon and WiFi on - can I force the web surfing to use WiFi? Does it have a protocol which it picks if they are both available?

thats my problem. I see both 3g bars and the wifi icon lit up together. So far when I tried it with the network off, the wifi did not open up a web page. But just did a battery pull and fighting with this weird OS error so once I'm back up and running, I will test again

I think some BlackBerry devices have the option. Can't find it on the Storm2 though. I think it would say "WiFi preferred."

make sure the wifi icon is WHITE and not GRAY. It's not working if it's gray.

Go to manage connections -> wifi options -> bb button -> wifi diagnostics. Your SSID, access point MAC, security type, DHCP-assigned IP address, should all appear. Most importantly: "status" should NOT say "The WiFi radio is not on." If yours shows something different it sounds like an issue between the S2 and the router, in which case I'd delete the connection and readd it.
