I have tried holding the alt key and scrolling down or up but the blue bar just goes to each message instead of highlighting them. I have tried it numerous times and am unable to select messages to delete

On my curve its the left shift and the trackball. To delete them all hit the menu key and select delete prior. Not sure if this works on the bold but its worth a shot. Welcome to CB!

Highlight the date bar where you want to delete the messages, clik Menu>Delete Prior confirm delete and your messages go bye-bye.
