I downloaded software to connect to a Mac, but it does not connect and my device does not show up on my Mac when connected via USB.

Which software did you download and which OS X version are you on?

Are you trying to transfer files? You might need a media card and a media card reader, which you'd then connect to your mac and be able to do all the drag and dropping of files like you'd be able to do with a USB. There's another option with a download onto your computer and syncing it with your phone and getting the app set up on your phone, but it didn't work for me so I needed to use a media card reader.

I've noticed OSX El Capitan doesn't like BlackBerry Link. I've had this problem with trying to connect my Passport since upgrading OSX.

I have also had issues with El Capitan and Blackberry link and haven't been able to get the two to play nice. I am hoping the next Mac OS update fixes the issue.

I have also had issues with MS Office 2011 crashing on a regular basis since I upgraded to El Capitan, but that's another issue all together.

I have a Macbook 12 inch. Blend and file transfer by USB work very well. Also with my son's older MacBook.
However, if your phone is encrypted, you have to decrypt it first.
Otherwise neither Blend nor USB transfer will allow you to actually view the file content.
