There are two reasons for Backing up.

1). you just want a safe Backup and you do not need to access the data on the PC

2). you need to be able to view the data other than on your BlackBerry

If you are requiring case 2). then you need to do what the coach says (always a good idea).

If you do not need the view or change the data then you can simply do a Backup from Desktop Manager. Also you can sync to a text file or and Excel .csv file which will still allow you to sync with Outlook Express and still save you Calender data to the PC in a way that you can at least view it in Excel or even in notepad if you save to a simple text file.
