As mentioned, the preinstalled samples have been removed but that is much more then just samples.
I would re-connect and run Applications Loader again. Review the installed applications. I have seen some cases where previously installed applications were not carried over after an upgrade.

Me Too!! I was running between 25-27 and after upgrading now I am running 43-45 with all the same 3rd party apps. I knew it would free up some memory but this is AWESOME, Oh and I have had no memory leaks, Knock on wood that this continues. Thanks to bmcclure937 for his installation guide, followed step by step and had no problems
I also got a bump in memory when I upgraded to 4.5. Not as large, but definately noticable. .97 seems to be the most stable version out there right now.
I have an 8320 and did see an increase going up to about 12 or 13 when I upgraded to .81(t-mobile)but that's it. I don't have that many apps and only 2 themes. How do you guys manage to get those numbers? Yes, I've done battery pulls, etc.
I'm now suffering from free file envy.

Your 8320 has 64 Mb of memory, the OP's 8330 has 96 Mb. That is where the big numbers come from.
I love seeing the numbers from some of the curve owners....it makes me feel better about my pearl lol....I always hover around 27 file free which I feel is pretty darn tootin good for a pearl at least according to what I have read( after the upgrade to 4.5 of course). I have nintai,cb launcher, car and driver launcher, google mobile, google maps, the weather channel and a few other little bits an pieces installed and feel that I get good use out of my berry.
just thought I would toot my pearls horn a little bit -
