I saw this continuing and now-familiar story on a news site today. With the possibility of every iPhone user freaking out (whether it's justified or not) isn't this the time to ramp up the advertising budget for BB10 and really tout its (true or not) superior security features? ...Or at least talk up the lesser possibility that BB phones are going to be targeted.

"Eddy Cue, Apples head of services [...] suggests that the case could give the FBI power to force companies to make users cameras and microphones accessible to government surveillance apparatus and anyone else who gains access to the code."

Yea but the thing we have to focus on is "forcing companies" part, could be BlackBerry, BlackBerry would obviously say no and force there hand because they do have that power, "You want to keep using us (the most secure platform in the world) for your government, than you better back off" type thing idk. But still "companies" is the keyword

What about a free / open source phone then? :-)

That will have to be positively hacked instead of social engineered

(that's what's happening to Apple now... they are kinda being coerced or "persuaded")

    :-)

It does. It was reported on the BBC world website earlier today but that quote seems to have been withdrawn from the updated version.

It doesn't make sense because the same would apply to Blackberry. What exactly is BB going to advertise here as far as security goes. "Our phones are free from the FBI turning on the camera or mic." They can't and wouldn't advertise that because it would be completely false. The same situation would apply to BB so there really isn't any type of security here to advertise, which is why the OP's post doesn't make sense to me.

Yes. The BlackBerry part does not make sense. We already know that BlackBerry is not among the list of companies supporting Apple's position.
So they definitely cannot advertise this to support BlackBerry security, on the contrary.
If anything, if the government would force Apple to turn on the mikes and cameras officially, they would force all smartphone manufacturers selling phones in US to do so, because it would have to be legal to do so.

BlackBerry has been fighting off government snooping since the BBOS days with Jim and Mike still running the show. Mike L's famous meltdown on camera with a British reporter stemmed from the line of questioning regarding government access to BlackBerry servers. It was why Mike flipped out so much, but that's not what hit the news. His breakdown was the headline.

Now do you really think BlackBerry in the decline have been able to keep the government pressure at bay? Any government wants the most secure network for themselves and access to everyone else's. BlackBerry may not even be able to provide the security we all think they can.

What most people need to realize with the whole FBI vs Apple subject is that this snooping tech is already used by the NSA and other intelligence agencies. They can Already turn on your camera and mic, and do on a random basis for intelligence gathering. What the FBI wants is to be able to use that intelligence gathered legally as evidence in court. And for that they need a precedent of the biggest brand in tech cooperating with their wishes.

BlackBerry will not profit from this either way. They are staying out of the conversation and hoping it doesn't turn to them. BlackBerry won't be viewed as the most secure brand any time soon.

Here's a thought: The only device maker you see being dragged into court by the Federal Govt is Apple. The FBI is trying to force the company to provide a method of access into a phone. Does anyone recall BB in the headlines for this? how about Microsoft or Google? no. Does anyone think that criminals are only using the iPhone? So, either the iPhone has some serious encryption or the others mentioned have a way and readily help when served. You can slam Apple but they are fighting for their users right to privacy. Why? because we all know that contrary to what the FBI says, this will not be limited to a single phone. While some here will say that the FBI should be able to do this and if you're not breaking the law you have nothing to worry about. Others will say that privacy matters. Personally, If you want to give up your right to privacy go ahead. Dont give up mine! It's not yours to give up

Yes, but people here should be reminded that Lazaridis and Blackberry were ostracized for the fact they wouldn't give access to the Indian government to BlackBerry servers in 2011 and also for the fact that London police could not monitor the rioters during the London riots because the rioters were using BBM.
But those were the days of Lazaridis and BBOS. Things are most certainly different under Chen, whose one of the many assignments was to render BlackBerry useless in terms of security and privacy for the public.

The worst part of this entire mess with Apple and/or any other company when it comes to privacy is that any government will use the "T" word to get around any privacy laws and that's the scary part.

Just a guess, but maybe the reason why Google and Microsoft aren't mentioned is that the government already has hooks into their systems.

He's serious.... It was the US government that sabotaged BlackBerry software development time and time again... forcing all those delays to the release date. It was the US goverment that implanted the software reboot glitch at launch. It was the US goverment that block Instagram and Candy Crush from supporting BB10. It was the US goverment who also caused BB10 engineer to miscalculate how much memory BB10 would finally need, forcing a last minute change to 2GB. It was those same implanted US goverment spies that cause BB10 engineers to miscalculate the battery size needed for the Z10.

Many want to blame the US because it was the first market that started moving away from BlackBerry.... but we can see now that it was only a leading indicator, as other markets followed. As they too found BlackBerry lacking in comparison to other products.

This Apple vs FBI is the same... this is just the beginning, other manufacture and other governments will require the same access.

The last sentence sort of cancels all the sarcastic prose you wrote earlier in the posting. It's always good to mix things up to create confusion.
Management stupidity, intentional or not, does not preclude the government from wanting to spy on all phones. The two can nicely go together.

John Chen publicly stated BlackBerry will bend over for law enforcement armed with a court order or warrant. The illusion of security in the face of words from the most senior company executive. If you run your own BES and only communicate with other smartphones on the same server you might be safe even from Chairman Chen.
