Is there any kind of software for the 8310 curve that would allow me to use my phone like a traditional handheld garmin/magellan gps?
I don't need directions or navigation. but I would like to be able to create way points or track my route.
I would mostly use it for hiking/hunting in places where I would have no cell phone connection - so the maps would probably have to be loaded onto my sd card or something like that.

Post 289 from Paul Haenel has a zip file with version 1.3.
It does not give you a bread crumb like my fancy Garmin (yet) but you can set a waypoint and tell it to track back without needing an internet connection. Try TrekBuddy also and let me know which you like better.
Bruce - can I load maps of the area i'll be in with blackstar?
Matt
No, BlackStar is like the $100 hiking GPS's with no maps. You drop waypoints an B* will give you an arrow directing you back to a selected waypoint. It will also tell you the distance to the selected waypoint and your speed of travel and has a compass that shows you which direction is north. This is perfect if you're hunting. You drop a waypoint at your truck and then go chase the birds. Once it's time to go back to the truck - select the waypoint and follow the arrow. Then have a beer....
BlackStar is great for basic navigation. TrekBuddy can use maps from your SD card. GPSed can track your route and save it locally (i.e., works with or without data).
All are free.
