Honestly I didn't do anything weird to it. I installed the Google app and every time I launch it, it locks on within 5 seconds. MUCH fast than it would have with GPS alone.

Where you actually able to get it to get satellite lock? Or was it just using the cell tower triangulation thing? Mine says GPS Unavailable?
It seems too close to be a cell tower triangulation. I'm within 100'.

Are you SURE that its actual GPS and not just cell tower triangulation? Is it DEAD on to your location or is it off a little bit?

I'm just hesitant to get my hopes up here...

I've heard that if you have a blinking blue light as your location, that means the program is using cell towers. Do you have that?

Yeah... I do have the blinking blue light. But it's VERY close to accurate. If it's a cell triangulation it's the most accurate I've ever seen.

I might go for a walk around the neighborhood.. now you have me wondering.

Check options/advanced options/GPS. What do you see for:

    GPS data source
    GPS services
    Location aiding

ALso, under options/advanced options/applications/google maps, then click BB/edit permissions, do all 18 items show "allow"? If not, which ones don't?

    Thanks!!!

Sorry my friend, but my highly un-educated guess is that you have a good cell triangulation. Now I'm wondering why BBMaps isn't working for you.

At least you'll get some exercise!!!

Mine has a blinking blue dot, with a lighter blue larger circle around it. It says accuracy withing 3800 meter, if I click the blue dot icon in the lower right hand corner (Landscape). When I click the icon it also says GPS unavailable.

I would bet that the people that have GPS working either A) don't really have it working and think they do but it really cell tower triangulation or B) they have VZ Nav installed and running in the back ground. I paid for VZ Nav for one day on my Curve and if I had VZ Nav running in the background then the GPS worked on Google Maps. Once I closed VZ Nav google maps couldn't use the GPS anymore.

Hopefully it is just a problem on Googles end and they need to update it to work with the storm. That is what I am hoping.

You might be right though. My location didn't move as it would with a GPS lock. I'm going to have to test this more tomorrow.

Sorry if this has already been answered... but my GPS worked with BBmaps outside... but inside it just says searching for satellites.

Is this standard? Will other apps in the future (like yelp, yellow pages type apps) be able to use this to determine your location? im confused.

This thread is ********. It doesn't work. "Location within 3000 meters" isn't GPS. It is the location of your cell tower. BB Maps works with GPS. It would be great if GPS worked for Google maps, but for all of you who are following this thread hoping it works, let me help you out...

GPS IS NOT WORKING IN GOOGLE MAPS!
Cell tower location is. Learn the difference, then post. And yes, all of my permissions are set to "Allow". Flame away.

I agree with you. Before Google Maps works (standalone) with the Storm, Google will have to add the appropriate programing to tap-into the GPS chip. The storm is unlike most devices (including Sprints Curve)

k... anyone out there a developer or know how to get some information to one of the developers? I cleared my event log and then set it to debug level. I then started google maps, tried to find my location, and then copied the contents of the event log. I repeated the steps for BB Maps (since the gps actually works in that program) for comparison.

    Google Maps:
    Code:
    #BlackBerry Event Log (cpt)
    #HwID: 0x4001404
    #DPIN: 0x3048adc3
    #PVer: 4.0.0.82

I would bet that the people that have GPS working either A) don't really have it working and think they do but it really cell tower triangulation or B) they have VZ Nav installed and running in the back ground. I paid for VZ Nav for one day on my Curve and if I had VZ Nav running in the background then the GPS worked on Google Maps. Once I closed VZ Nav google maps couldn't use the GPS anymore.

Hopefully it is just a problem on Googles end and they need to update it to work with the storm. That is what I am hoping.
that answers my question.... google maps was working then stopped, but know I know why, I had VZ Nav running
