Can someone tell me everything that I would need to get gps on my curve.
From what I understand you need a GPS Bluetooth puck (which they sell on this site)
and thats about it. You might have to subscribe to a service...
Is that the bluetooth gps reciever thats like $99?
Yes. Some range from $70-$130
So if I were to buy this:Navibe GB735 Bluetooth GPS Receiver for 8100 (Pearl), 8830, 8300 (Curve)...Is this the only thing I need besides a subscription?
Sorry about all the questions, I just want to make sure I get everything I need to get started.
I have one for my device, it is the Mobile 10x by Garmin. Cost about $199.99 Retail, comes with 1 year subscription. Awesome device, awesome service.
I just came back from a 2000 miles trip to Ireland where I used my Rogers Curve with a Vodafone Ireland SIM and WisePilot software as a GPS.
The GPS I used is a Holux GPSlim240 Bluetooth receiver. Really small and fast to lock its position, it also uses the same USB cable as the Curve to recharge itself, cutting the need for a bunch of transformers and cables.
This GPS is so small (2.5 x 0.8 x 0.6 inches) that I have attached it to my holster (I have bought the swivel holster) using Velcro, and it fits perfectly, without being obstructive at all. See:

I strongly recommend this GPS receiver with the Curve!

With all these gps recievers, if I am out on the road and enter a place that doesnt have great reception, does that mean the gps wont work?? That makes me nervous cause then I would not only be without a phone, but lost as well..:)
The reception has nothing to do with your cell service. The GPS receiver gets its signal from satellites, not cell towers. As long as you have a view to the sky, you should be able to lock in on the satellites.
THAT is the catch with a phone-based GPS. The maps are not on the device, they are on the network. So if you are in a spot where there is no data service, the GPS itself will work and receive its position from satellite, but you won't have a map to navigate on, rendering it unusable. Also, the fact that the maps are on the network create delays when the software needs to get data from the network, which is highly frustrating when you made a wrong turn and you are waiting for it to recalculate its route. And this always happens when you're in the middle of fast moving traffic, and do not know where you should go!
I have had this problem while in Ireland, as data service was not that good in some spots and the software was just telling me that it had "network errors". Really frustrating. There is no solution to this except using a software that stores the maps on the device, and in all my searches I was not able to find one.
A partial Blackberry "solution" is BBmaps, which caches some maps on the device, so if you know you'll go into a region with no coverage you may try to manually navigate the screen through the region while you are still under coverage, but that is not really workable.
The only real solution at this point is to use a Pocket-PC or a laptop with a software like iGuidance which stores the maps on the device. I have carputer in my car, and this is what I use when I'm at home.

So is there no software that makes use of maps stored on the card for Blackberry?
Not to my knowledge :-(

I use the Freedom Mini GPS. Hangs on my keyring and works quite well.

This issue of not getting map updates due to being out of cell service is a big issue AFAIK. I have a subscription to Telenav now and it works quite nicely as long as you have cell service so the maps can be update as you go. Why in the world wouldn't wouldn't they cache some of your route on either the BB or your SD card? It really doesn't seem like this would be hard to do to me.
When you are using a GPS you normally don't know the directions to the location your heading to. As it is now I guess you could look at the turn by turn directions (although I haven't tried that to see if they are maintained when you go outside cell coverage, I would assume they are though) to help get you through until you get to an area with cell coverage again.
I cannot get Google Maps to see (bluetooth) my Navibe no matter how hard i try. BlackBerry Maps would do so once i started GPS Navigation, and then Google Maps would pick it up once that was established. but it was less than reliable to go thru this whole process.
Now i have inherited a Curve with OS 4.5, and BlackBerry Maps is missing. I cannot seem to download i again (avoiding reloading 4.5 altogether) from anywhere. I heard somewhere that Verizon wants you to subscribe to VZNavigator in order to use the TRU GPS on the device, but i find it hard to believe (not really) that they would prevent you from using a purchased puck to accomplish the same thing!?!? Argh!
thanks for 7#..
verizon has unlocked gps on the curves. I had to use my desktop manager to download bb maps back to my phone. You have to go to the app loader and check the box for bb maps.
but the gps only works for bb maps no 3rd party apps yet
