The 9700 also has AGPS which uses towers together with the GPS to get a fix quicker. If the GPS is unavailable the towers will get you an approximate location, which on mine varies from 100-2100 meters.
Hope this helped.
I registered and never got an email with the download link. Did the email come instantly for you?
Nevermind...got the email
Philly, I couldn't disagree more!! My 9700 picks up GPS much more quickly than my iPhone. Inside or out.
When I used Poynt, it took 2-3 minutes to pickup my GPS location, after that it worked great. Recently, I used BB Maps while driving around just to test it out. Picked up my location within a minute, and followed my location around within half a mile(probably closer than that) as long as I was driving. I haven't used the actual driving directions part of it, but I can't imagine it being horrible.
Hi, I did the test, and while it was scanning, it TIMED OUT
omg....what is going on?
It sounds like yo have faulty GPS in your unit. Do any of the other tests work?
I would ask for a replacement.
go to options GPS and list all your settings before you overeact and return the device......actually first do a battery pull then go to options GPS and list all your settings here
That would reallly suck!
But it says,
"Go outdoors and get the GPS receiver fixed to satellites.....etc"
So I have to go outdoor? I am currently in my house.
Does this test work for you guys while you are inside a building?
GPS data source device GPS
GPS services location on
location data enabled
location aiding enabled
make sure you are OUTSIDE with a clear view of the sky when you scan for satellites using the refresh GPS option
Ok I went outside and the test and GPS refresh both locked very fast, maybe 30 seconds.
But some of you say it also should work while indoors right?
And whats the point in locking to satellites while everytime I use GPS it is going to search/scan again
thats what i figured...YES you have to be OUTSIDE ...sometimes you MAY get a GPS lock indoors but that depends on a lot of factors....
first you need to breath
GPS is not SUPPOSED to work indoors
everytime you use GPS from this point on the search scan time will be greatly reduced....
you dont have to go into the menu to do anything the next time you want to use GPS.....just open your maps program
Yes, outside is the best.
The GPS working indoors depends a lot on where you are, mine works if I am at a window or standing underneath the skylights.
I didn't realize you were testing it from inside and getting panicky, now it doesn't seem like you have any problem with your GPS at all. :)
The GPS chip on the 9700 is the SiRF star 3 which is used in many high end hand held devices and autos etc. It blows away the infinion GPS chip in the Iphone 3G(S). I have done many comparrisions. The Iphone GPS is very laggy as it only updates once in 5 seconds no matter what app you use. The Blackberrys updates every second in all apps except for google maps which is once in 5 seconds. im sitting in my office building on a rainy day top floor. I get 7 sattelites on bbmaps.
I too seem to have the problem some of you are having. I recently acquired a 9700 from Rogers, and I dont have BB maps installed, nor can my gps locate satellites in the Options>Advance Options>gps pane.
When I installed google maps it says i dont have a data plan and its blocked, the self test gps does not acquire any satellites at all; it just says timed out.
Do I have a faulty gps?
