AT&T told me I can google chat to my heart's content without using SMS. They said if I use IM, the data transfer is considered SMS. I don't use SMS because email works fine for me.

I don't always completely trust what the salesman tell me. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, you can use GTalk. It uses data not SMS...
