I never made any attempt to "force" them. I simply ask, they said no, I said OK.

I usually direct them, ''go to playstore, type BBM and click download... etc'' ... don't ask but guide and tell them to, then connect them with the pin and show them some fun channels...

Without wanting to start another BBM vs. Whatsapp war I must say Whatsapp is a good messaging app...nothing really wrong with it.

Even the people I know with BlackBerries use Whatsapp these days as like 0.5% of their contacts have BBM.

To be honest I use BBM and whatsapp, I prefer BBM. However, while I was in Italy, BBM and whatsapp worked fine and dandy.

However, when I went to Bahrain this year, there was NO BlackBerry signal at all, I'm talking the little BlackBerry icon, it just wasn't there or disappeared for hours on end. If I didn't have WhatsApp, I would have had no way of contacting people. Believe me, you don't know how irritating it was.

Moral of the story: Don't rely on one messaging application, you should always have a backup because you don't know what might happen. The server could crash or whatever, and when they do, your means of communication are gone!

I live in Italy, there's nothing you can do about it !!

Everybody uses whatsapp as it's easy to find friends because they are automatically added by their telephone number.

So I managed to make my girlfriend use BBM and actually she likes it more than whatsapp but she tells me that she uses only with me because nobody uses BBM here in Italy.

Also there's no a true benefit in using BBM cross platform because there's no videochat by calling an Android smartphone.

Right now whatsapp and BBM work more or less the same, the only true advantage comes when someone doesn't want to give you his phone number to maintain privacy, however the problem here doesnt arise because girls give their phone number easily...

If your friends aren't using a Blackberry there isn't a reason for them to use BBM, especially when cross platform WhatsApp is a better messaging app.

Nothing wrong with using both. The people who will try BBM will see that it's great. If they don't want to download it, no problem. Not gonna try to force anyone

if people really appreciate to contact with IM then they will switch, I deleted What's App when Facebook bought them in 2014 and never looked back. Now I have my wife, in-laws, parents, best friends, brothers and sisters on BBM. So anyone that doesn't fit into that can text/sms me or write an email... those are the options.

I wonder if posters saying BBM has no advantage cross platform, because videochat does not work, actually use it? I like BBM's message retracting, message editing, HD pics, glympse, private chat, timed messages and use them cross platform . On the other hand, there is no ping and flashing LED on other phones and iOS users seem to have a weak notification system ( or else they are ignoring me). I guess I am lucky as I still have a lot of BBM contacts.

Never forced OP that. It's circumstances beyond his control. Worst case is to download and use Whatsapp while in Italy and uninstall once he leaves.

Not within a country since most plans anyways have unlimited SMS nowadays... but text messaging cross border can get quite expensive.

I Europe it is usually better to get a local sim card for 10-15 which will at least give you half of the cost back in pre-paid credit on the number. If you have a non-European number it's the only way to go.

My T-Mobile plan allows unlimited text and data. It's the voice calls you pay for. But I plan on using what's app for most voice calls

Also, T-Mobile is running a 3 month unlimited data promo!
