this is crazy you said this. I just saw in the november mac-life magazine a laptop bag that has solar built in and can charge all your devices on the go including laptops and phones and such retailed for around $250 this could be just what you need =)
Ok so I dug the magazine out for the info.
Voltaic Systems | Voltaic Backpack, Solar Backpack, Solar Bag its 229 apparently and the review states that its made out of recycled alluminum cans and it charged the devices in foggy San Fransisco so this really might work for you =)
That's pretty crazy. I've never seen something like that before.
Thanks for the replies.
Just saw this as well:

I might invest in one
My first post and I would like to say I love this site. Now my thoughts if you want to go cheap is to get a 12v solar panel for a deer feeder then go to a auto parts store and get one of the cigarette lighters for a car and then connect it to the solar panel. And then use a car charger. Its the same as the bag but a fraction of the cost prolly like $50 for everything if not cheaper. Just my 2 cents. NAC

why don't you just buy another battery? When I am in NYC I plan on buying another battery
Only problem with solar powered chargers, is that you need light to charge the phone. A better option would be a hand crank charger, that way you have power at night or during a daytime power outtage when it's storming away outside.
Also there are those battery chargers that you plug into the phone and AA or AAA batteries in the mini charger power your phone.
One example here hand crank cell phone charger
Here is a one shot option one shot cell phone charger.

This was just a quick search, but I'm sure you can find local options for these at Walmarts, Targets and pretty much any place that sell cell phone accessories.
I have seen the cell boost chargers for years in 7-11s and Compusas.
I keep several of these handy. They work great for charging ipods, blackberrys, and a host other things. I probably have about 8 of them in various places.

Ebay has a ton of solar chargers for your cell phone. I wonder if anyone has tried any of these, as they're pretty inexpensive (starting @ about $15). I'd be curious to know how well they work, and if there's any potential for damaging the phone.
