It would really suck if the US is not included.

    Z30, Q10, Z10, iP5, SGS3
It would suck if anywhere was excluded!

Sounds way too good to be true. Something tells me carriers won't let it go so easily...
Thus I think there's some kind of misunderstanding. And updates will still be pushed by telcos. Alas.

P.S.: Fingers crossed it's true though.

How could they bypass carriers and still expect carrier unique apps like T-Mobile wifi calling to work?

As frustrated as I am with T mobile for not releasing 10.2 yet... I would be really ticked at BlackBerry if they pushed an update directly to me that disabled wifi calling.

If that is confirmed it will be such a great 2014
Even if I cannot understand how could BlackBerry have contacted ALL carriers from ALL around the world to make them accept that..

While I'm not 100% ready to agree with their 'Global' comments, I stated how they could pull it off in my post.

January 28th rumored as the date BlackBerry 10.2.1 will begin rolling out | CrackBerry.com

Now, I know what some folks are thinking. You don't even have BlackBerry 10.2 yet and you're entirely right for thinking that way because when it really comes down to it, an official release date doesn't mean much if your carrier never pushes it out to the masses. But that fact reminds of another rumor I heard back in June 2013, that some U.S. carriers had no intention of pushing BlackBerry 10.2 in the first place, which as far as I can tell ended up being true for Q10 and Z10 users, especially those on Verizon. This time around they could be more likely to get it out ASAP, as it is the update which they've been waiting for to release.

The reason this might make sense is that if carriers are pulling BlackBerry handsets from shelves and doing very little to support the OS in general these days (which seems to be the case in many countries right now), they might be less worried about BlackBerry pushing updates themselves because the traffic on the product is so low that it won't affect them much either way.

I think this has been misinterpreted. I think they are talking about the option for the auto update. Hope I'm wrong.

Auto update. Update on new OS now will be push globally and user will be prompted for update (if on network) or OS will update automatically when on WiFi. If connection weak, it will resume when good connection available.

T Mobile would have their own little software download just like Apple and Android do to enable certain functions on their respective networks.

I don't think by Blackberry pushing out the update would affect how you device functions on your network.

There would be a pile of legal issues to allow direct release by Blackberry (without carrier testing) - i.e. liability aspects.

Maybe updates would only be allowed if they dont include changes which could impact the carriers network?

Anyway we'll find out soon enough...

Let's face it carrier relation has been dead for a while, carriers made it so by choosing to stop selling the devices. Global makes absolute sense if true. F T-Mobile USA

What if BlackBerry pushes the update without the carriers. And then whenever the carriers are ready, they can push theirs too after adding whatever they would like to add.

As an American I don't think we like to distance ourselves from anybody, we are the same as any other consumer and would like to get the updates in a timely manner like everyone else in the world.
