Aren't most phones available free with a 2 year contract after 6 months?

This is standard operating procedure. It is one advantage of not being an early adopter...better pricing, more bang for the buck.

    No.

Takes two years for an iPhone. Previous BlackBerry's also held their value a long time, even with lagging sales.

Androids and WP it depends on the device and if it has a replacement in the line up or it it isn't selling well.

iPhone is a different story, they've always retained value will.
HTC One is only $80 on Amazon with a contract, isn't it newer than the Z?

+1. The carriers are probably trying to clear their stocks as well. The price of the HTC One has also been slashed as well.

HTC One is $200 at Best Buy.

If Amazon could price the Z10 less than $0, they would.

The Galaxy's also keep their value quite some time.

AT&T has slashed the price of the HTC One in half from $199 to $99

Well, it could be for a number of reasons really? One thing is for sure, this will get the phone in people's hands that otherwise wouldn't have even looked at BlackBerry before. It's more important to get word of mouth out at this point. (as long as they don't talk about BlackBerry link) If it takes money away from the company, it will come back when BlackBerry's reputation is possibly restored.

Yep. It rarely pays to be an early adopter.

I've seen ads promoting the price drop of the HTC One, so "someone" is backing the price drop. And now that everyone is carrying the same devices, when one carrier drops a price, they all have to.

But the fact that HTC is having problems moving the ONE, really doesn't help BBRY bottom line.

Carrier's may be (or may not be) eating these price drops, but you can bet that if they are, they will be very careful with any future BB device orders. So ultimately, this is going to hurt BBRY's profits on devices in the coming quarters.
