Does anyone know how I can unclutter my folders by getting rid of the unnecessary icons/links to the things I don't want or need?

Highlight the icon, hit the BB menu button and select "hide"
They disappear so you don't have to see them anymore.

I chuck 'em all into a folder called "Crap", then hide the folder.

This seems like a good idea because just in case you wanted to go to it again you will know where they all are.

Exactly. In addition, when I DO "Show All" to get to something else I've hidden, only one extra icon appears (the folder) instead of a dozen or more.

Been doing this for years on every berry I've owned.

A lot of the icons people want to hide are actually links to download apps that were pushed to your device via a service book from your carrier. Even if you delete the service book they always come back after a reboot or battery pull.
