A friend damaged her Samsung phone. She had to get it replaced by Samsung.
When she gets the new one, will she be able to see the old text messages or are they just saved on her phone and not some server somewhere, like email would be?
(Note: she did not back them up on her laptop)
I'm sure the same would apply to text messages with a BB10 device too.

They should only be saved on your phone, so they are gone. Your carrier is not allowed to keep them

Why would you think that. It depends on each individual carrier policies but most don't. Virgin Mobile at one point kept them for 90 days.

As a practical matter they are gone because individual users don't have access to carrier storage but you bet the NSA does.
