From the Financial Post April 5 :

    - 62% of Canadian own a smartphone; Of those, 21% are iPhone, 14% are Blackberry and 9% are Samsung Galaxy (note the apples to oranges comparison with all Blackberry and iPhone models lumped together, compared to a single Samsung model)
    - 74% of iPhone owners will stay iPhone, 53% of Samsung owners will stick and 51% of Blackberry owners will stick, with 16% of Blackberry owners planning to move to iPhone
    - More of those earning over $100,000 owned a Blackberry (23%) vs Samsung Galaxy (14%) - iPhone not mentioned

So the reporting seems somewhat flawed (1 Samsung model compared to aggregate of all Blackberry models and all iPhone models), and iPhone ownership of high income earners not mentioned. Plus high income typically = older, so the higher marketshare in this area isn't really that reassuring. But it's still interesting data.

Here's the link - sorry not much detail :

I am much more confident in the reports from companies that specialize in phone data - like Comscore. At the end of December, they reported: comScore: Android now has 40% smartphone market share in Canada | MobileSyrup.com

The report also indicated that 62% of Canadians own a smartphone. Googles Android OS apparently has the most market share with 40%, followed by Apples iOS with 35%. BlackBerry is still dominant, but fell over the past 12 months, at 20% market share. Microsofts Windows 8 and Nokia vanished Symbian OS both represent 2% each. No word on the brands, or specific devices, that are making up for the 40% of Androids market share.

I would expect that BB would have dropped to 16% by the end of Feb.

So even if Iphone and Android 's loyalty numbers are higher -there are significant numbers leaving too. We can expect that the numbers of BB owners that leave BB for Iphones or Androids to be offset by the those coming in from Iphones and Android. TH says that 50% of Z10 sales are to those who are new to BB. I expect then that BB's market share decline to have stopped this year and by March 2014 they will still be in that 16 to 18% range.

Wouldn't it be great if BB had a 16% market share in the USA ... maybe but not this next year.

Yup. They use galaxy for all of their android phones (and tablets). There's the S series, note series and a whole bunch of others. Samsung has non-android smartphones but their sales are fairly small in Canada, which is why the study ignores them.

Despite the launch of the Q10 and Z10, BlackBerry still concedes the higher end of the market to Apples iPhone, said Forum Research president Lorne Bozinoff.

Really the q10 is 'launched' but cant have any effect on ownership of the high end market because its not on sale yet. Really puts the whole survey into question when the guy running it doesn't seem to get the basic facts right. He also claims the S4 has eye tracking technology. I cant believe people that do research for a living don't do the proper research before spewing.
