This is what I don't understand.
If he is so qualified, where was he 2 years ago to take the reins instead of that bumbling inexperienced buffoon that goes by the name of Thorn?

It's not like BB didn't know they were in trouble. Why they decided to bring in an inexperienced wallflower that has zero public speaking talent is beyond me.

Doing something else and Mike was still there.

    BTW it's Thor, not Thorn.

He's got a ton of work to do and changes to implement both company employees (executive board members), culture and business strategy. His background in government, international relations and being on the board for technology, banking entertainment companies gives him a solid blend of experience. Combined with successful turn arounds at Sybase and startups gives me some hope.

I guess I will have to see what strategic moves he makes after his initial assessment of the company.

Chen doesn't really have a lot of experience when you look at his resume so don't expect miracles. I honestly don't think he can return BlackBerry to the profitable company it once was given the extremely volatile and dynamic marketplace BB is operating in nowadays.

Does anyone know if Chen has even been to Waterloo since this deal closed?

I would be concerned if he hasn't.
Presence is what he needs to project now. Both to the EE's and to the consumer.

Normally I don't say anything, but that concentration was just too high. "Should have," "would have," "could have," "should have". "Of" comes from mishearing the contraction forms (i.e., would've, could've, should've), and is grammatically incorrect. They are also meaningless when you try to read the sentence using the definition of the words.

Not that this invalidates your message. I agree with it.

After reading the Open Letter I'm convinced that this guy means business.
There will definitely be dead-wood trimmed from the BlackBerry bush and new (likely unknown to us) opportunities to be explored and built upon.
I'll say this about Mr Chen.
He looks like he means business.

John Chen is one of few who appears capable of steering Blackberry out of a nosedive.

Thorsten did a good job at cost cutting and letting go of drift wood, but made too many fatal flaws which has put Blackberry further in the hole. $1 billion dollars worth of unsold inventory?, primarily the z10, that is a foolish mistake down to poor forecasting and predictions. That excess stock should be shipped to Africa and the other developing markets which actually have Blackberry customers.

I believe John Chen will continue to trim drift wood and slim down the hardware business. I hope he utilizes his reach within Asia which has massive potential for Blackberry.

Whether he can take Blackberry to a profit will be interesting over the next 1-2 years.

Regardless of his compensation package, I don't think a man like him would put his reputation on the line if he wasn't capable.
He appears the sort of person who values his reputation more then just money.

If he cannot do it, then sadly I don't think anyone else can. This is the last roll of the dice.
