I thought this article sums things up nicely - tomorroe RIM needs to go beyond unveiling new handsets and OS. They need to articulate a vision. Combine that with solid initial sales and they'll be ahead of MSoft. Without one of those and it will be a dogfight. Without either of those - or at least without market enthusiasm for whatever they articulate along those lines - and RIM is back in the crapper.

    Not bad. Two nits though:

"Research in Motion still had a Blackberry subscriber base of 79 million as of December 1st."

He's implying that RIM's BlackBerry peak was much higher than this. Amazing how many of these reporters assume RIM had a gigantic base once and then lost it. I get why given the big decline in the US, but the reality is that - until the recent quarter, they kept growing elsewhere".

They are at 79 million down from 80 million, which is their all-time peak. They had 10.5 million when iPhone came out.

"is still a far cry from the company’s 20% global smartphone market share in 2009."

Marketshare and users are not the same thing necessarily.

"As we saw with Palm, which had ample cash on hand at the launch of its Palm Pre product"

This is complete, utter BS. And total revisionist history. Palm was up to their eyeballs in debt, had less than $250 million in cash, and using words like "our ability to continue is in doubt" in financial reports.

Where on earth does he get this????

"To be fair to RIM, while it’s install base is well of peak levels"

Again, research. How is it "well off" peak levels? The peak level was 80 million! Fact check ...
