It's not BlackBerry alone that will be affected. I got the message too today with the advice to upgrade. I guess I'll be bidding farewell to WhatsApp by the end of the year.

What stings is that BlackBerry is still selling BB10 devices. The other OS (except iOS) have really been "dead" for some time.

Will still buy BB10 devices as long as they still work. Guess I will have to get myself a 7" Android tablet for whatsapp. I will miss whatsapp on the hub though

We had a good run. So long BB10.... You will be missed.

I was wondering the same thing.
Whatsapp, as far as I know, hasn't actually come out and stated for what reason it's no longer supporting BlackBerry. They are a company driven by profits and it's their every right to support whatever platform. It would have been nice to know what is lacking on BB10 that prevents them from supporting the platform.
Maybe they decided since BlackBerry isn't going to support or develop BB10 OS then there's no point in them developing and supporting their app on BlackBerry.

BlackBerry users are accustomed to paying for apps that other platforms get for free. Maybe they could have offered a subscription based service for BlackBerry users to offset the support and development costs. From reading the reactions to whatsapp dropping BlackBerry, I'm sure many BlackBerry users would gladly fork over $2-$5 a year for subscription.

For me I don't use the app. Couldn't care less.

There are greater tragedies pleasures in the world. Life goes on.

I hope everyone understands it does not work that way.
The BlackBerry 10 app is a client, that connects to servers.
Those servers know which client apps are connecting to them, and have the ability to refuse connections on that basis.

If you refuse to update, you'll just be denying yourself any bug fixes (and/or features) we decide to implement between now and the cut-off date.
What about those who install the Android version on their BB10 device? Your explanation of the the Client-Server relationship suggests that the BB10 app is the issue, not the BlackBerry hardware. The message we are getting from Whatsapp says it is the hardware. Which is it then, the client app or the client hardware?

Mark Zuckerberg doesn't seem to like BlackBerry. What did it ever do to him? Facebook and Instagram never supported BlackBerry and now they are taking Whatsapp off.

Hey dkonigsberg ... thanks for the clarification and thanks for all of your help and support while we had WhatsApp on BlackBerry. You were quick to respond and definitely very helpful. Sad to see apps leaving BB10, but know that it isn't personal. Us BB10 users really love the OS and wish our future was brighter.

Wishing you the best on your future endeavours.

It's more of an API issue or lack of them, things like overlaying of screens and waking the screen up, the dev can't show a whatsapp calling screen only a daft dialog which makes the user experience awful, obviously people blame WhatsApp not knowing it's actually BB's fault

There is a new feature in wats app tht when u in a group chat u select a certain msg from the ppl msging and reply exclusivly to tht particular msg in group, it will be quoted above or something, its in android and ios not in bb10.
Second many of the video formats are not working in BlackBerry 10 too. I have a porn group and 20-30 pc videos dont wrk.

Thirdly: wats app is about to start customer service no for many businesses, which means u just need to click on search and their servers will find to u and behind tht service provider have a webapp of wats app with multiple windows for it. Idont think bb10 is ready for tht stuff. Maybe os wise some issues with them as they will talk to google search algorithim, and we donthave a search engine as such, thats why windows phones are not in d list, maybe coz of bing.

I believe they issue is not simply that media files can't be sent, it's because of the differences in the structure of the Android and BB10 file systems, and I don't think it is just a simple file path issue, which can be fixed in some situations.

Well looks like App is what important to you so may want to get a Devise that will support you Apps need, Blackberry in this day in age is not one of them. Welcome to the times.

I think before the end of the year all Blackberry devices will
get an upgrade to the Android operating system.
Blackberry is only focussing on Android.
If you look into the BES12 you will see that you can adjust the policy of Android
    os better then Blackberry os.
Now also with all the big apps ending there support its probably a signal that
the Blackberry os will be having its last year....
