With BBM channels and the potential for conducting transactions over it, my guesstimate would be three times this as BBM is going to be more than just a messaging application.

Wasn't all of blackberry worth like 5bil? ;)

I have the slightest clue. *starts developing an instant messaging application*

Lol, the channel part is only valued high among fanboys here. It has less than a few millions user and are not growing much at all.
In reality, it is the real time communication as a SMS/voice replacement and information exchange platform that companies like FB highly valued and are willing to pay for.
I *think* that $57 billion might be a little on the high side... Didn't we know that Facebook kicked the tyres when BBRY was hawking itself around - so what didn't they like ?
No phone numbers on BBM, that's what they didn't like

Perhaps but the monetization of Channels could take the value upwards of whats app as that is an unsecured messenger platform that's just that. A messenger service.

This is all for the data harvesting. Mapping numbers to names and conversations. FB is totally in bed with the NSA.

Hope this will get some of my friends to switch to BBM again.
BlackBerry 10 signed.
The naysayers will say they have nothing to hide, not knowing the real ramifications of this.

Viber was sold for 900 million. I think Facebook overpaid. They might start using Whatsapp for world domination. (Very typical of them)
TBH, I think it has more to do with the userbases than the features. More developed country users use Whatsapp. Who uses BBM? Indonesians.
Aside from the fact that developed world users are more valuable for advertising and dating mining, the Whatsapp userbase has greater synergies with Facebook's current portfolio of Facebook and Instagram since the users overlap/cross over. The same is less true for BBM, esp. considering that there isn't an Instagram app available for BB10.
Simply using raw usage numbers to valuate BBM is a faulty methodology. The value of the userbase is clearly more important. Consider iOS app development vs. Android.
I have numerous friends and family who don't care much for social networking. Took advantage and got some of them to switch over to BBM today :D
So I guess Facebook have 450 million more phone numbers.
Better android than android. The future is black....
Nice editing ;)

It's not the value of an instant messaging system. It's about buying users. $19 billion (reported elsewhere) / 450 million users = ~$42/user. Pricey, but maybe it's cheaper than what it currently costs FB to acquire users...
Viber would net... 105 million * $42 = $4.41 billion
BBM would net... 80 million users (reportedly) * $42 = $3.36 billion.
I installed whatsapp for all if about 5 minutes. This news is all the reason I need to not try it again. Ever.
there goes our privacy, our phone numbers and our data.
it's #BBMme time everyone!!!
If BBM starts to be a payment platform as well, a lot more than now

I think this is going to have a positive effect on the amount of people I have on BBM.

Well I believe this will ultimately hurt whatsapp, and benefit bbm!
In the short run, facebook chat and whatsapp will run as stand alone apps, but shortly after facebook, will incorporate whatsapp into it, this will NOT be welcome by a lot of facebook users, who will ultimately stop using whatsapp.
Many have facebook friends that they do not wish to communicate with ALL the time, many don't even have facebook, and many simply hate it.
But all in all a great deal pulled of by whatsapp, 16 billion is simply brilliant!

Your prediction is based on emotion. Facebook wouldn't have made this acquisition if they believe it will affect either user base in a negative way.
The deal is only $4 Billion in cash. The remaining $15 Billion is FB stock which has imaginary value and could change at any moment.
Even $4 Billion is waaaaaaaay over price!
