Lol, the channel part is only valued high among fanboys here. It has less than a few millions user and are not growing much at all.
In reality, it is the real time communication as a SMS/voice replacement and information exchange platform that companies like FB highly valued and are willing to pay for.

I *think* that $57 billion might be a little on the high side... Didn't we know that Facebook kicked the tyres when BBRY was hawking itself around - so what didn't they like ?

Perhaps but the monetization of Channels could take the value upwards of whats app as that is an unsecured messenger platform that's just that. A messenger service.

TBH, I think it has more to do with the userbases than the features. More developed country users use Whatsapp. Who uses BBM? Indonesians.

Aside from the fact that developed world users are more valuable for advertising and dating mining, the Whatsapp userbase has greater synergies with Facebook's current portfolio of Facebook and Instagram since the users overlap/cross over. The same is less true for BBM, esp. considering that there isn't an Instagram app available for BB10.

Simply using raw usage numbers to valuate BBM is a faulty methodology. The value of the userbase is clearly more important. Consider iOS app development vs. Android.

It's not the value of an instant messaging system. It's about buying users. $19 billion (reported elsewhere) / 450 million users = ~$42/user. Pricey, but maybe it's cheaper than what it currently costs FB to acquire users...

Viber would net... 105 million * $42 = $4.41 billion

BBM would net... 80 million users (reportedly) * $42 = $3.36 billion.

In the short run, facebook chat and whatsapp will run as stand alone apps, but shortly after facebook, will incorporate whatsapp into it, this will NOT be welcome by a lot of facebook users, who will ultimately stop using whatsapp.

Many have facebook friends that they do not wish to communicate with ALL the time, many don't even have facebook, and many simply hate it.

But all in all a great deal pulled of by whatsapp, 16 billion is simply brilliant!

Your prediction is based on emotion. Facebook wouldn't have made this acquisition if they believe it will affect either user base in a negative way.
