ESN => Electronic Serial Number used by CDMA carriers to identify the phone being used on their network
IMEI => International Mobile Electronic Identity is used by GSM providers (SIM cards) to identify the device being used on their network, in AT&T's case their IMEI sweep scans accounts and if detects a smartphone IMEI it adds a data plan.
Yes it can still be unlock. You should be able to find the IMEI under Options > Status
It is possible to unlock the 8830, but it will only work on overseas GSM networks. It cannot be used on North American GSM carriers' networks.
