I was thinking - with SMS capped at 250 outgoing per month, couldn't I simply send an email to whoever I want to text message? I know that you can send an SMS by emailing <phone number>@carrier.domain.ca or whatever their SMS email address is. Seems like I could send a lot more than 250 text messages this way with a 6GB data plan.

Nope you will get billed if your going to do that. Just use their email not phone # when messaging.

I don't think the sender will be billed for an SMS message if s/he sends a message to "[email protected]" but the recipient certainly will. If the recipient has many more SMS messaged in his/er plan then the sender that might be a viable option.

Another option would be to use an Instant messenger-- those use data as opposed to messages, but the IM format relatively "bandwidth friendly" so you'd get more bang for your buck.
