When i get a txt message my screen doesnt light up, it stays black. Does anyone know if this is a fault with the phone?

No it is normal but there are several applications which will do it for you.

I have SMS display on which was only about �1 but BBLight does it too I think and it is free.

That is normal. You will hear a tone (if you have that set) or vibrate and the LED light will blink. You can change all those in your profile settings.

There is a program that does what you are asking. i forget the name.

You don't like it, CBK?! This is one of my favorite features of the bb! i hated when, on my env, a text or emails alert would interrupt what i was doing or light up the whole screen. It's like my phone was being pushy.

i like the subtlety of the blinking light and a soft tone. Especially when on the internet....no pressing "ignore" every time i get a message.
