When I travel to Africa from UK, I simply take out my UK sim and insert a pre pay sim from the country I am visiting. It's prepay and I pay a little extra for the Blackberry BIS service (eg in Nigeria with MTN about $30 a month).

Does any carrier provide this in the States?

I will be in the States for just under two weeks and cost of international roaming is horrendous.

    Thanks in advance

I know that T-Mobile does do pre-paid phone plans, but I don't know if they do pre-paid BIS (I see on their website for Sidekick, but no mention of BlackBerry).

I suppose any kind of prepay is better than nothing. The last I was in the States I had to buy a prepay CDMA handset with serious limitations on countries I could call. Now i have a handset that useless to me!!

a simple GSM sim card would be nice that you can top up.

C'mon America home of free enterprise am sure someone has seen this market potenial or am I just ignorant of the providers?

I always see Amercia as being a bit behind with the times in terms of mobile phones... i was shocked to find out you have to pay part towards a handset..

    MetroPCS offers a blackberry plan:

    MetroPCS | BlackBerry Curve

But it is not available in certain markets (including NY).

Looks like it is severely limited in coverage:

    MetroPCS | Coverage

    NJ is a no go.
