    Hi,

There's an employee discount from Telus, in which I can get "Unlimited Canada and U.S. Data (Does not include tethering)". Can the carrier (Telus) detect Mobile Hotspot? The 9900 I'm using is unlocked, and the OS is not a Telus OS.

    Thanks,

    Michael

    Short answer is yes.

The carrier OS doesn't make much of a difference, as all specific version numbers are the same. The difference is which service books the carrier has elected to push out. These are what allow them to activate or deactivate specific features on your device.

Mobile Hotspot and Tether are similar, but not the same. Mobile Hotspot is your phone's ability to broadcast a wifi signal that other devices can use and get internet. This is done over the air without wires. Tethering is often done with a wire or cord (USB cord) and connects your phone to the other device, usually a computer and lets you use the phone as a modem to get internet on to the computer. Sometimes this type of tethering (using the phone as a modem) can also be done over the air via bluetooth. It's likely BOTH are prohibited. It's more likely that your provider can tell and prevent you from trying to use the phone as a hotspot. On Verizon we can NOT do that without having the hotspot plan. HOWEVER, they can not detect tethering. This may be totally different with your provider. Also, they could detect a spike in your usage and THAT can raise flags, this is how many folks at ATT got caught tethering.

The workaround is to hit them data lines hard from day 1! Haha

Thanks for the explanation, PK. You put it in words much better than I ever have.

Another way of them trying to control what you do with your data!
