RIM has announced that they will be adding FREE HTML and rich text rendering and adding Documents to Go to the Blackberry device software v. 4.5 in 2008! They are also adding a slew of new features related to BES but being a BIS guy, that didn't catch my eye. Here are the details. You gotta love it!

    RIM to Update BlackBerry Features
Today, 9:30 AM by Eric M. Zeman

Today Research In Motion announced that it will upgrade the features on its BlackBerry smartphones. Rather than receiving an entirely new platform, RIM will roll out the following software upgrades during the first half of the year. The inbox will get HTML and Rich Text support, so emails can be seen in their original format, including graphics, fonts, and colors. Users also will be able to search their remote email servers for old emails, see the availability of contacts prior to sending meeting invites, and use presence features to see when IM contacts are available for chats or phone calls. Lastly, RIM is adding Documents To Go from DataViz so users can download and edit Microsoft Office documents

How will these upgrades be rolled out and will existing BB users be able to take advantage?

Yep, 4.3.1 has docs to go, and will be capable of the html email. Html email requires an upgrade to BIS which is coming this spring or early summer.

It will be available on all 8000 and 9000 series devices. None of the 7000 series devices will be upgraded to OS 4.5 which will be required for these features.

When will this OS version be available? Sorry for the next question...Will AT&T push out the updated OS OTA or will it be downloaded from blackberry.com?

Assuming the OS is updated to 4.5, how would one remove EMV software?

4.5 (used to be called 4.3.1 but it's been changed) is rumored to be coming out this spring. No official word, yet.

To remove software from your BB, including the Empower Mail Viewer just go to Options >Advanced Options >Applications and remove the desired application.

How will the updated OS be deployed? For a fee from RIM? OTA by AT&T?

All updates come from your carriers RIM site, if your carrier site does not offer it to you, in most cases another carrier will have it and you can download and install it from their site. All of RIM updates are free of charge, with no indication they ever will be a charged item.

Example: If T-Mobile has it and AT&T does not, theirs no harm in downloading it from T-Mobile and installing it...BUT lets for sake say Verizon has it and T-Mobile does NOT, you CANNOT download the Verizon version for your T-Mobile device.

I read on RIM's web sit that the O.S. upgrade will allow HTML on B.E.S., but there was no mention as to whether or not this will also be supported on B.I.S. Has anyone heard if the upgraded O.S. will support HTML using B.I.S.?

    Thanks

Yes, HTML will be supported this spring-summer on BIS with an upgrade from BIS 2.4 to 2.5.

    John,

Do you know if RIM will be announcing at WES, which is taking place MAY 13-15 in Orlando, FL, any info regarding OS 4.5, as well as any details about the new BB models in the 9000 series?

    The suspense is killing me!!

    Keep on Crackin',
