The thing that I don't like about skins when you keep your phone in your jean pocket is that they "grab" your pocket when you take your phone out and they don't protect your keyboard against miss dial and your track ball gets lint. That's why I think a pouch is better.

I've never bothered with a case, skin or holster for my BlackBerries until the Storm. With this pos, I have no choice because RIM, in their infinite wisdom, forgot to add the standby feature. The only way to get into standby now is to use a magnetic case.
The lock button is not a substitute because you have to wait until the screen dims before it actually locks.. and then it wakes up again as soon as you touch any button!
My Blackberry gets cold if it goes out without any clothes on. It wears an invisible screen protector (Invisible Shield right now, but I HATE it, so I've ordered a BSE protector) and one of the OEM rubberized cases. Doesn't add a lot of bulk but keeps the back from getting scratched when I drop it.
