Lol... I'll keep my 9900 as a text entry device LONG after it ceases to function for anything else. Most times I'll grab it when my PKB PC is sitting right there. Despite 100+wpm fluency on PC.
I only had mechanical typewriters, and profs who wouldn't permit "white out", in my college days. But can surely visualize happily composing graduate theses on 9900! Absolutely!!
Especially thru meal times. ;)
When vkb users claim that they're faster on a vkb than a pkb, and then say that they have to go back and correct the typos - then they're not faster, are they? Compare the times it takes to type out ERROR-FREE text on a vkb and a pkb, and I guarantee that the pkb will win. This will hold true even with autocorrect disabled - it's simply too easy to hit the wrong key on a vkb.
I do tend to create verbose emails and posts on my Passport. I also love pairing it with my MS Surface and using it as a remote kb/touchpad. Where I find that the Passport alone becomes limited is when I have to insert photos into the text and have the text flow around them. This task is more suited to a desktop or at least a large tablet. Tables are another challenge better suited to a larger screen device.
That said - one reason I also love my Surface 3 is the fantastic handwriting recognition. More often than not, if I'm just writing paragraphs of text, I will handwrite on the Surface. In cursive, no less - it's even faster than swiping words on the Passport! Did I mention I'm 52 years old? I doubt that 80% of CB members would have a clue of what I'm talking about. I just wish that Windows could learn new words, the way that BlackBerry does.

PKB users definitely write longer and more accurate messages.
Even though I don't have a BlackBerry now, my past usage is definitely a credit to my typing prowess. Even in this day and age of 140 characters or less, I refuse to abbreviate when messaging people.
Interesting thread...
My own experience is this; up until very recently, I was still using a Nokia 3109 'phone as my daily device of choice. No Internet, YouTube or anything like that... just phone calls and text messages, and very little of the former of those, to be honest.
I used to love texting, and one of the things that kept the 3109 at the top of my "must haves" was my ability to text with just one hand, and one digit; my thumb. Laden down with heavy bags, I could carry on a full conversation with my parents just using the phone pad pkb on the 3109, sending long messages as a matter of course on my way home from the supermarket. I also loved that I can use Nokia's PC Suite desktop software to send texts using the desktop / laptop keyboard when the phone is connected to the computer, and that's probably when I sent my longest messages.
Then, I finally moved on from the 3109 and got hold of a Blackberry Z10. It's been 3 or 4 months now, and friends and colleagues have commented on my reduction in texts to them over the last few months. I myself know that I have stopped texting so much now I have the new phone, and the reason..? I just find it so much more difficult with a vkb.
I know it's my issue, not the phone, and millions of people use vkbs with no issues, but I just can't seem to do it. I used to be able to walk home, get a text, write a reply and send it, all without missing a step... now, I find myself thinking "Oh, I should text so and so" but not then wanting to or bothering because I simply don't want to stop, put down my bags and struggle to write the message using my Blackberry.
I ought to say that it's not just the Blackberry as in my current job, I've been able to try out many different makes of phone with vkbs and I just can't get on with them. The BB one is the best so far for me with the "flick to select" word functions, but it still eludes me to be able to type coherent sentences on it without having to go back all the time making corrections.
I used to think it was a mental block on my part, but I see there are a number of other people willing to admit they have a similar problem too. Even for me, getting a vkb version of the dialling number pad didn't help... I still couldn't do it cleanly and accurately.
For me, the very fact that is with the 3109, I never used to even think about "having" to write a text, I just did it without a second thought whatever I was doing... long or short message. Where-as with the BB or any vkb, I find myself thinking "Can I do it now? Do I have time to stop and "compose" one?" and that alone should be justification for me going back to a pkb and a number pad design at that. But, I've found that the other benefits of the new "Smartphone" currently outweigh the easy to text advantage, and so I'm trying my damnedest to stick with the Z10, which is a truly lovely piece of kit for so many reasons.
The other angle is that I now also find myself more likely to ring and speak to someone rather than text them because of the above. Is that a good thing or a bad thing in itself? I don't know... everyone says we are becoming a faceless, voiceless nation of texters, so perhaps it's a good thing that I want to physically speak to someone.
Anyway, apologies for the rambling. That's because I've been able to write this on my laptop pkb, by the way. ;-)
Regards
JKW
Wow, a 3109! That's old school!
I miss the long battery life on those old Nokia's.
@James, myself and a couple dozen coworkers endured similar experiences for nine months with our then new Z10s and another 3 months on Q. Our use is very specialized but our productivity & precision recovered only after returning to our old 9900s.
Classic is the most "single handed friendly" of BB10 and second most single handed friendly behind 9900, IMO. We used our Zs & Qs single handed but 9900 & Classic can't be beat for that, IMO. 99 is getting a bit clunky for browsing, etc, but you might find Classic worth looking at. Fwiw.
I think that texting and messaging in general has been replaced a little.
Most still do it, but just not to the frequency they did five years ago.
Posting a message or a picture on a social site seems to have replaced sending thousands of messages a month.
I have an Alcatel burner phone I use on specific occasions that reminds me of the 3109... Handles calls and texts #LikeABoss Lasts several days without fail also... Comes in handy from time to time, can take a beating and live, but on the off chance it does get destroyed, it's basically free to grab another as a disposable option... Old Skool tech still serves its purpose...

Not for me... I do not use most Social Networks (no instagram, FB, snapchat, etc for me) But I DO send massive amounts of SMS... My Classic at 2x the SMS vs my Priv, but combined I clearly still go Beast Mode in the messaging field...

Well you convinced me. I've been vacillating on whether to buy a Passport -- the three row keyboard and pocketability kept me away -- but I found a used, pristine Passport on Kijiji yesterday, and I just bought it this morning.

@Sorinv: I intended this message as a reply to you. Whoops.

He wrote on people's minds! ;)
No smartphone needed.
I find that using a physical keyboard, I have a tendency to definitely write out longer messages using the physical keyboard. With the Classic especially, there is a tendency for me to really write out some long passages. I find that if I use this keyboard, there is going to be a greater likelihood that I will be typing out longer messages than I intended. Look I'm doing it right now!
I have the Priv. I also own the Z10, Q10, Classic and Leap. I love BlackBerry 's VKB. But when it comes to long typing, especially with my job where I have to communicate quite a bit via texts and emails, I prefer the PKB on the Priv. I just find it efficient and I am more accurate with my PKB. But for shorter messages, the VKB works fine. And when typing in a moving vehicle, the PKB is easier. I juts like having both and being able to use what works best for me.

Between the Passport Silver Edition and the Classic, both of which I currently own, I do find typing much more enjoyable on the Classic. The more compact keyboard makes for a more comfortable experience, negating the need for longer travel between keys. Having the "alt" key and being able to rapidly transition around from letters to characters to numbers is fastest on the Classic.
After reading this thread, I have turned off both auto-correct and word predictions. I actually find that having done so actually promotes me to be a better typer: being extra mindful of hitting the correct keys. I suppose that I could certainly type all of this out on my Passport but there have been a number of times where I will wish that the SE had an "alt" key, as well as a four row keyboard.
When I had to transition from the virtual keyboard of the Z30 (after two years of use) to the Passport and Classic, my thumbs were definitely in a deconditioned state as they were unable to really cope with the demands of physically pushing keys. Now, my thumbs are strong, and I actually do find tapping on glass to be quite "lazy" and, of course, heavily reliant on auto-correct and word predictions.
Going to back to what the OP was asking, I think that he was actually asking something quite valid. I certainly do tend to type WAY more on the Classic than on any other BlackBerry device that I've ever used before. The Classic is almost encouraging its user to just type! This keyboard can't be beat, and it's probably why I keep coming back to this device over and over again.
Yes! My point exactly; physical keys are less frustrating, and not "comandeer-able" by predictive technology -- which contributes to longer, perhaps deeper, more thoughtful messages. I think that deliberation and intent 'kick in' when we realize we won't be bailed out by technology.

Pkb is far superior. Much easier to type with much reduced errors. Also something nobody mentioned is that you can type normally when sitting in a moving car, as a passenger of course.
I find it impossible however hard I try to aim at the right letter to tap.

Back when I was "toughing it out" on my Z10, I noticed fatigue on the back of my thumb from lifting & holding. I generally rest thumb on Classic & 9900 and slide over the keyboard to each key. Muscle mem finds keys.
Also, not sure when I really started doing it but, I've been using thumb NAILS since at least my old 9650 days. Most of my coworkers do this also. Aids precision & speed over thumb pads. At least on Bold style keys.
The fastest "speed demon" of my coworkers has the smallest hands and the longest nails. Go figure. She suggested letting my thumbnail grow to aid reaching Classic's far column. Works pretty well.
That coworker is blazing fast with both Z30 and Classic but will typically be found with 9900 in hand by end of a hard day. Due to fatigue. We can't use anything resembling autocorrect because of countless unique nomenclature and acronyms, btw.
So are the content creators or the consumers who created the "demarcation line"?
[edit] all sarcasm aside, i find that the "demarcation line" is drawn when users thumbs become 'so large' as to accurately hit the key intended. The onscreen keyboard gets mashed with my big thumbs, at least i know when i press the wrong key on my extended 'full screen' physical keyboard.
I don't know about all of ya'll, but i have huge fingers and even bigger thumbs.
Yes I love my physical keyboard and yes I do type a bit. Not crazy about typing on glass either not very accurate. I know a bunch of people who love their device they're using legacy devices. They didn't know the Classic was available. They just keep buying devices on Amazon when the old one dies. I have 20 year olds who want my physical keyboard. I see a market in my area (Tri-State NY, NJ, CT) for physical keyboard.

I find the vkb makes me much much faster as a typist and has no adverse effect as to the length of my replies. The pkb are always so cramped and uncomfortable for me as i wear my nails on the long-ish side. I prefer the glass as my words flow much easier. So OP, no.
You are correct that this may be more about personal preference than typing superiority. I used VKB's for four years and did just fine with them. I have been using a PKB again for less than one year and I don't know why I prefer the PKB on my Passport, I just do! I also prefer a physical keyboard over a touchscreen on my computers. I believe that makes me, at the very least, a superior dinosaur! :D
I doubt if PKB users write more than VKB users, but (to me) there's something addictive about typing on a PKB.
