Greetings to all.

I have a 6 gig. /month data plan with Rogers. I was wondering is there some sort of GPS charge when I use a navigation program? Or is it just data?

Thought I would check here before waiting on the phone for a half hour to talk to a Rogers rep.

Not for having an active GPS, no. But downloading maps uses data and some mapping software has a monthly fee.

If it's something like Google Maps, that uses data. If it's something like Garmin that the maps are loaded into your phone, I would think not.

It's not really "free" since it uses your data to pull maps from Google's servers, and you are paying for that data usage. Like bt said it's only free if the maps are downloaded to the device, and most don't do that since it can take up quite a bit of space. Also, the advantage of pulling the maps off of a server is that they will always be the most current maps, whereas maps downloaded to a device will not change with road updates and construction.

If you have the 6GB plan then a few KB's here and there for maps isnt even going to put a dent in it, if you want something that has all the maps stored on your device (no over the air usage) go with Garmin...

Using the Maps GPS only charges uses your data usage, there is no GPS usage fee...

It just uses the Data. I have a 500MB plan and I use GPS occasionally, and I am still fine.

Rogers doesn't charge for using GPS in BB Maps or Google Maps, only for the data they both use to load the actual maps. With your data plan, you're covered.

well if its just satellite gps thats always free but if its cdma then you are charged find out which one it is it's probably gps not cdma
however depending on the application if it saves the maps, directions, and sounds on your phone than no you dont get charged anything but if it constantly has to keep updating the position than yes you do get charged

Where is this Garmin maps stored on your phone? I was under the impression that the Garmin maps, ON THE BOLD, functioned like Google. That is, maps aren't stored on your phone but downloaded as needed which is the reason they don't come on micro sd. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The (free) app I'm using is called "amAze". It gives me turn by turn & constantly changes the map as I move; the same as a GPS device does. How would I know if the service is cdma?
