You need to turn off the radio (manage connections > turn all connections off) but I still watch movies, listen to music and play games when I fly. Never had a problem

Turn the radio off, I have forgotten before but I usually turn it off. There have been reports of problems with the phone radios on and reports that it doesn't matter. Maybe it doesn't but I don't want to be the reason there is a problem with the flight controls.

I've run into this many times. All airline employees are required to ask you to turn ALL electronic devices off during take off and landing.

The previously mentioned posts are true during in-flight only.

    Good point Bob!

You have to turn it off during take off and landing, however since berry's take so long to boot up (and I work for a certain airplane companies testing dept and we have electronics on the a/p all the time) i tend to not power down during take off and landing, but i ALWAYS have the radio turned off, while it's unlikely it is A) an FAA regulation and B) could potentially cause a disturbance in signal if everyone figures hey what's one phone going ot do

You should turn off all electrical devices on takoff and landing.
After you are allowed to turn on electrical devices (laptops, ipods) you may turn ur BB on but with
    The radio antena off

    I second that!

I always see people disregard requests to turn off all electronic devices. I'm always too paranoid not too. I don't want to be the schmoe whose blackberry causes the plane to bury itself in a mountain.

Takeoff and landing are very critical. I'm more than happy to turn my electronics off during this time.

Changing your profile to "Phone Only" does not turn off the radio on your phone. It's only purpose is to disable the sound or ring tone notifications of your berry for email and messages. You will still receive phone calls and messages, but there will be no sound for your messages. While on a plane you should turn off the radio as others have suggested.

I too just turn off the radio to play a game or something if I get bored. I doubt you'd get signal from 30k ft in the air anyways.

I third that as well, wouldn't wanna be the reason for a crash personally.

You're right, my dad is a pilot and he says that it used to be an issue, but the rule is obsolete now, but it's always good to be overly cautious rather than have something happen and look back and say "oops, it seemed like such a small risk at the time".

Yes, while there are NO documented cases of a plane crashing due to someone using a mobile phone during a flight it is still advisable to switch it off or at least switch the radio function off.

I don't know how many times I've flown and haven't turn my phone off. I tend to forget cause it's in my bag and then I just don't care. All it does usually is lose signal. Besides mythbusters proved it wrong lol.

I haven't flown since I got mine but I know several people who have and all they had to do was turn the wireless portion of the phone off. But during take off and landings the phone and al other electric devices gad to be turned off.

Well, above 3,000 feet you can't get any signal anyway (My dad has tried haha).

I turn all radios off and during takeoff and landing I just press and hold power to power off the pda. Once given the OK I turn on the pda and watch movies.

I don't think phone signals would harm a plane in any way but think about this. How would you feel if every schmoe around you was talking away on their cell phone while in the little sardine can of an airplane. Just a thought...Maybe the reason is for the comfort of those around you.

On the episode of MythBusters distortedvortex mentioned, they cranked the signal to over 10 times the strength of a typical cell phone and found no evidence of conflictions with the operation of the plane. Still, I think it's a good practice to turn them off when told to do so.

    Yes...I'm very boring at parties
