I've always wondered what the difference between the 9700 and the 9780 was? Don't they look exactly the same, and aren't they both on AT&T? (plus weren't they released relatively close to each other time wise...)

I know that the 9700 doesn't have an OS6 upgrade (at least OTA) from AT&T, is the 9780 just the OS6 version of the 9700 from AT&T?

Also, how do both of those compare spec wise the the 9650 (vzw/sprint)? Aren't they exactly the same phone, just that they look different and one has CDMA capabilities?

Basically the 9780 has a better camera (5 mp vs. 3.2 mp) and twice the memory (512 mb vs. 256 mb), which is why you can load OS6 on the 9780 but not the 9700. Both run on the 624 mhz Marvell PXA930 processor.

The 9650 is a hair bigger in height and width, has a 3.2 mp camera and 512 mb of memory, runs on a 512 mhz Qualcomm MSM7600 processor, and obviously it's CDMA vs. AT&T's GSM.

You can compare all the BB's at the Compare Blackberry Smartphones page.

Ok thanks! I actually didn't know the 9700 only had 256mb of memory... and I also didn't know that the 9700(80) had a bigger processor than the 9650...

I don't think the 9780 is available on AT&T. I believe the 9780 has twice the memory at 512 mbs and a 5 mp as opposed to 3.2 mp camera and 256 mbs in relation to the 9700. In relation to the 9650 the camera is once again 5 mp vs 3.2 mp ad I think the 9650 processor is slower, maybe 512 mhz vs 624 mhz but I might be wrong on that.

You can load OS 6 on the 9700. I'm running OS 6 version 461 with about 95 mbs free and roughly 20 apps loaded.

I believe you're correct there ... 9780 is only showing up as available on T-Mo.

But ... will it still be 80 if AT&T is allowed to gobble up T-Mo and swallow it whole? Things that make you go 'Hmmmm ...'...

Just to reiterate, in case it gets lost, the 9700 can run os 6 and runs it fine.

There's a tiny, barely noticeable difference between it and the 9780 in this regard, for example some web pages with huge amounts of images (such as in a heavy wallpaper thread on a message forum) will come up "too large" for the 9700 but will load fine on the 9780. Apart from this, the better camera on the 9780 and the fact that I think the 9700 looks a LOT better are the only differences

    Faster processor on the 9780
Twice the App Storage: 512 vs. 256 MB
Twice the RAM: 512 vs. 256 MB
Much better Camera: 5MP vs. 3.2, but the 5MP camera takes much better pictures
Better performance on the 9780 due to the spec advantage

Don't really see a reason to get a 9700 if you can get a 9780 and if any of the older devices get a bump to OS 6.1 I'd wager to guess the only ones in the running are the 9330, 9780, 9800 and perhaps the 9650

Just to let you know the 9700 can handle OS 6 even with it's limited memory. It's been leaked for quite some time now and not sure if it's been "officially" released or not yet.

Both of them use the same 624mhz processor, as does the Torch, Pearl 3g and Curve 3g. The CDMA phones run the 500-ish mhz processor. Though, I don't know if the difference is even noticeable with these phones

not to hijack, but the Torch uses a different processor, the PXA940 vs PXA930 in the others. Common misconception because it runs at the same clock speed, but it is in fact underclocked from its recommended 1 ghz. Which makes me wonder if there'd be so much b!tching about the Torch's 'antiquated' technology if they had turned it loose at 1ghz, or even 800 mhz.
