So I threw the Dev Alpha "D" (Let's just call it that for now) in Photoshop, overlayed a Q10 over it, lined up the BlackBerry logo and speaker, then made a measurement relative to each other.



There's not a whole lot of science involved in this, but from what I'm taking, is the display is 3.5" on this new device.

Dev Alpha "D" - 3.5", 1440 x 1440px. 581.85 PPI.
Q10 - 3.1". 720 x 720px, 328.46 PPI.

I'm not a mathematician, so there might be some error in this. But it seems like a good estimate.

I have a Q10 and I love it for its physical keyboard but I hate the square screen as I makes watching videos a pain at best and half the apps I want aren't available for the Q10 if BlackBerry doesn't give me a QWERTY phone with a rectangular keyboard they I don't know what I'll likely have to switch to a full touch screen when my contracts up.

It can't hurt to have a higher pixel density. Actually, the paper spec riders have been putting the BB10 phones down like the Z30 for not having a display in the 4-500 PPI range like competitors. This will at least make them look like they're among the more "cutting edge" devices.

Thanks for doing the math op. I've been wondering all day how many inches that prototype is. I've decided I'll only go for it if it's a rectangular minimum 4" screen.

That's true, there is still a market for it but this isn't the year 2001, it's 2014. In this day and age, people are embracing larger screen sizes, regardless of what people say about weight, one-handed usability, etc. For goodness sake, even the iPhone currently sits at 4" inches.... what is BlackBerry doing making a device with a 3" inch screen (Q10) or even this prototype that is supposedly the next QWERTY device, the Windemere???

A rectangle screen is the way to go in these times of media consumption, content creation and heavy messaging (email, text, IM, etc). BlackBerry really needs to understand this. I think the best thing for them would be to adopt one screen resolution. Take the screen size of the Z10, 4.2" inches and put a physical keyboard on it. There you go, one screen resolution, easy development and you can service both camps (all-touch & physical QWERTY).

Ideally, just get rid of the BlackBerry logo on the front. If you have to put your logo on the front, you lack confidence as a company, straight up. People should be able to see your device and know right away what it is and BlackBerry doesn't have this problem. People see the physical keyboard and right away the first thing that comes to mind is "BlackBerry". Second, tighten up the internals: Looking at the Z10, the earpiece should have been brought down and sit above the screen and then put your light sensor, front facing camera and notification light to the left or right of it. That could have saved a ton of space. Slap on the physical keyboard, would have a 5-10% size increase and you get what I have below (a crude photoshop):

In my line of work, I deal with a lot of professionals, business owners and people with lots of money (stock guys). I've seen a quite a few of them carrying a Q10 and when I ask them about it, they all say the same thing: "The screen is too small." That the is baseline complaint common amongst these people. So what do they do? They're still carrying two devices, either an iPhone, large screen Samsung product, or tablet.

I know, it's been done a thousand times (concepts) but I guess this is more in the realm of doable since it's based of products that already exist. Originally I just wrote a two sentence response to this topic but then I was driven to write more. Just kinda ticked off because I really want to see BlackBerry win and win BIG because they really can, even as a niche product provider.

Stretching the Q10 along isn't enough. It's too long with little width. Increase the width a bit as well, so it doesn't look so weird

It looks weird because it would likely be the same length as the Note 3 but significantly narrower.

Where are you getting the 1440 X 1440 from? It sounds high. I mean even if it were actually 1080 X 1080 that would be a ppi of 436 which seems much more realistic.

I think you are actually overcomplicating things by measuring items with an unknown size and it is probably better to work with what you do know.

If we assume the 1440x1440 part is true then the range of ppi for those seem to go from 480 to about 550 depending on the size of 16:10 display, however this device has a 1:1 display so you only consider the width. If we choose the lowest value (likely to be cheapest display of that rez) that would work out as 3" per side, that would lead to a display size of 4.25" and a device that while wider than usual would not be as top heavy as slapping a physical keyboard underneath as z10.

Samsung has their logo on the front, by your statement they're expressing a lack of confidence. Also, I've noticed a Windows logo on the face of a couple devices.

Personally I prefer having BlackBerry grace the front. If I had to have a logo vanish I'd prefer it to be carrier branding.

How about nothing on the front in terms of branding? Leave it for the back of the device. It's just wasted space on the front. Every mm counts is my main concern. Go look at an iPhone for example.
