I know it's been beaten to death, but I would like to ask for serious help. I was able to video my first born son's actual birth with my Torch before, but I honestly did not know that the encryption was turned on at the time. That phone is long gone, but the memory card is with me.

I only want to be able to recover the video of my son being born, if anybody could please help point me in the right direction on how to be able to open the file I would truly appreciate it. I now have a 9900, and as expected, the video cannot be opened by the 9900. Please help.

Your going to have to find an encryption specialist. Hopefully someone has knowledge enough to crack it.

Thanks for replying. I was wondering if there was someone here in CB, I would be willing to pay for the service.

I still have my Torch. I am not sure how encryption work and if it could be opened on any Torch or if it has to be the same one you used to record it. If it works with any Torch,I am willing to help you. You could upload the video to my Sky Drive account and I would upload it once decrypted. PM me if this will work.

When you say you had encryption turned on, was it being encrypted with just a password or password and device key? Either way safe answer is the file is gone, you can pay whomever you'd like how much ever you'd like, I specialized in non-linear cryptology for a good portion of some of my studies, research, and work, and I'm trying to be honest with you just forget about it until at least 2030 as a service you could pay for...

Anyway back to my first question, password or password with device key? If the latter is the answer then just forget about it, if it's the former then maybe there's something that could reasonably be done...

Thank you for the offer, but from what I understand it has to be opened with the same phone that was used to record it, so unfortunately your Torch won't work Thank you very much for the offer though, I truly appreciate it.

To be perfectly honest, I am not sure. If I upload the file somewhere like dropbox, would it be possible to tell from that?

Without the device that originally encrypted the file you are pretty much done. Think about it, how much of a security measure would it be if you could encrypt a file in one device and then use another device or method to decrypt it.

My experience with this, fairly limited, was that the original file on the original sdcard is required to read on another Torch if you used only a password for encryption. You have to set the torch password to what your torch used, insert the sdcard then access through BlackBerry Desktop or via PB Bridge. If you can see the .rem extension you wont get the decrypted file.

If you used password+phonekey you are out of luck.

    Isn't that how encryption/decryption works? O_o

You send encrypted data from your phone and it gets decrypted by the phone on the other end...?

Yes but that is a completely different matter. In your scenario both the sender and receiver would have the means necessary to encrypt / decrypt the files, usually by way of the same software and the proper "keys" to do so. You are sending an encrypted (secure) file(s) to someone who you trust and because of that trust you have also provided that person a means to access said file(s)

Encrypting a memory card assumes that you are the beginning and end of that transaction and therefore you are the only one who has the means, and authorization to access those files. In the specific case of BlackBerry, part of those means is the original encrypting device.
