No mention of Q10 or others but.....
Roughly 8 per cent of Canadians are almost certain to buy one of Research In Motion Ltd.s new BlackBerry Z10 smartphones, according to a new poll suggesting the company could sell as many as 2.6 million of the devices in Canada over the next year.

Forum Research Inc. conducted the poll on Feb. 6, a day after RIM launched the new smartphone in Canada with an advertising blitz. Thorsten Heins, RIMs CEO, also made multiple media appearances in Toronto, where many investors, wireless industry executives and others have followed the companys fall from grace and recent momentum with great interest.

The firm asked 1,091 people in Canada, aged 18 or older, whether they would buy a BlackBerry 10 phone. About 8 per cent said they were almost certain to buy one of the devices, while 19 per cent said they are very likely to buy one, according to the poll, which led Forum Research to suggest RIM may sell anywhere from 1.2 million to 2.6 million devices.

You have to put in perspective. If that number translates into the US with a population 10x bigger than Canada that is 20 million in sales in the US. That is not a bad number.

Guys there are only 35 million people in Canada so to sell 2.6 million phones in a country of 35 million is pretty damn good if you ask me.

Keep in mind the author says, "In Canada"... if Canada contributes that to the overall global sales, then the number could be quite impressive, no?

I don't think so. Not sure they ever sold 3 million in Canada, even at their peak. Hopefully Canadians will show support more than they normally do

Keep in miond that only half have smart phones. So, it would be more like 16% of all smartphone users, not 8%.

They need to do the poll again. 1061 is not a big enough of a sampel set in my opinion. Also, where was it taken? At a restaurant or in a mall or in a cell phone store?

That, and also you take out the elderly and the children. 8% for sure, 16% very likely? That's really good.

N=1061 is a whole lot, at least in my field of study. Above a certain number, it is a moot point, because everything keeps averaging out.

Also remember many Canadians buy their phone on a 3 year contract. That makes the pool of potential switchers somewhat lower. Especially as the iPhone and Android haven't been around all that long.

What do you think they need to do in order to achieve a a sample accurate to +/- 0.05 ?

Well, the Population of Au Canada is about 33 Million, so it stands to reason that they will sell a bunch of phones, but I'm not sure any one person can pinpoint the numbers. To be fair, this is the Hometown, so it stands to reason that they will sell a ton. We'll see...the US has 10x the population so hopefully, we can move a bunch here South of the Great White North.

Just got back from the Rogers store near Davisville subway stop in Toronto. They are sold out of their 15 unit allotment and are waiting for replenishment.

The woman said they are not doing as well as Apple but are not that far behind. Of course, much of this is pent up demand and we will have to see if it has legs.

Wonder if Rogers only committed to a limited number of phones and that is all BlackBerry produced or what?

I am sure they are producing as many as possible, but obviously the initial shipments made by the carriers were there to establish levels of demand so they are not going to be able to simply ignore orders for other regions just to replenish a carrier that did a poor job of gauging the level of demand for a product.

The polling distribution won't change much whether it's thousand people polled in Canada or a million.

I know. And remember, each carrier gets the phones made exclusively for them. Different packaging and software, even if it is just the splash or ringtone.

let's just say, they DID sell 2.6M Z10s in 2013.
those people are now on 3 year contracts ( most of them, anyway ).
so if they sell another 2.6M in 2014, and another 2.6M in 2015. that's a total of 7.8 million Z10 owners by 2015 in a country with only 35 million people.
that's impressive. nearly 1 in 5 people in Canada would own a Z10 by 2015.

obviously, this won't happen, as people will be buying Q10s, Z10s and whatever else comes out the BlackBerry pipeline.

I think they are incorrectly saying Zed10 when they mean BB10 devices.

2.6 million in BB10 sales would be pretty good for Canada. I believe the projected smartphone sales will be about 14 million in 2013, so that would be 18.6% market share for the BB10 devices alone. When combined with some BB7 sales, it would push BlackBerry's market share to over 20% in Canada.

I'd imagine that more people will be open to buying a BB10 model once they see the phones in use too.
